Play more cautiously, analyze risk vs reward quicker, learn when to run (before its too late)... then write the Roguelike "Advanced/Pro" guide. :p
Early on, if you're going to trade up to something higher than a corvette, you might as well keep an emergency warp drive in case you get put in a crappy situation and can't run away. I've never actually used one yet, but I wish I had it in two of those deaths since I wasn't mining at all at the time anyway.
When and if you die, you lose everything on the ship and the ship itself and get your beginning ship (sans modules) to start with all over again. Your squadmates are not bound by this rule, so get them as soon as you can so you can mooch protection off them while you build yourself up again.
Bank as much graviton and elysium Ore as you possibly can. When you die, ore stored in the universal bank is saved. While credits are also saved, what you can do with the ore that you can't do with credits is go to a planet demanding ore and sell the ore to the planet for a very pretty penny. Think of it like a personal investment into insurance. I was able to replace everything from selling elysium ore and the credits I had saved up.
That's all I can think of to offer for roguelike specifically. It's definitely doable even if you lose your ship a couple times; I can attest to that.
That is certainly what I thought having not tried it yet.
I'm waiting for a few patches before I start another play through!
And I will be playing Roguelike
My tips are:
1. Leave enough money or resources (rescued pods or ore) to be able to buy at lease one weapon which is 4-5k
2. Get your squad members as soon as possible, they will cover you if you died in a tight spot.
3. Get an ambulance drone ... makes it easy to get those pods you are saving as insurance money
4. Play more cautios at the start, maybe just do some trading if that's your thing.
5. Don't give up after a few times. Once you get past the initial start it does get better.
Due to my play style I use ships with drones and spec for drones. For fun and coolness factor I have joined the Omni faction ... which were down to just 4 systems when I finally was able to join. It is definitely do-able. I don't have the Cruiser yet or new capital ship but the frigate seems to do the job fine at the moment. I just got to level 20 and got all my squad members.
*If you dont like mining or carrying stuff around like me, you can use small missiles for better price/damage ratio and it let you save more money.
*Entire game invaded by pirates, They are so frequent, annoying and they can be a real challenge even at the endgame. Thats why i always choose kinetic armor and shield protection. So pirates are usually can't do too much damage.
*Zergs are nothing at the end but they are serioıus threat for mid&early game. So maybe its a good choice to use energy hull protection with kinetic shield protection but zergs are not common threats like pirates.
*Empire capships are definetely junk. In every faction fight i had to use my ship as a shield to protect capship (1 empire capship = 0.5 other faction capship) So probably its a bad idea to chose empire on roguelike mode.
So its a bit more tough as free union ships are agile and all but they only have small vessels it is a challenge but it is fun cause i am finding hit and run tactics effective and having to pick off craft that are bigger than me with half their hull.
Empire. Bigger ships are not always... gonna win ya a war got killed about 8 times mostly cause i wasn't paying attention to my flight path.
It depends on how you wanna play really.
Faction battle can get intense and you really really gotta pay attention to where you are going.
The game is still in a work in progress state which is awesome
If you want to make a bit of quick cash as well you can always just load on on supplies and deliver am too other planets nearby that need em
Zerkers at the start are gonna be a pain but if you get lucky and take a weakend one down theres a good amount of money right there and exp.
Just add a section into this

It's very interesting that everyone posting in here seems to be playing omni
I joined the Empire on my rogue save, but yeah, lots of omnis out there.
Better with a separate Roguelike/Advance Guide. It's no longer Basics. :)
It will evolve!
It will no longer be called the "Basic Game Guide", it WILL BE.... da da da
the "Game Guide"
Bought it out of precaution, never used it. I intended to use it once, but didn't have enough energy and got myself blown up. Learned to manage energy usage the hard way.
The E warp has its risk just like Getting taken out you'll end up losing something
*Throws a keylime pie @ ya*
