"Early concept art".
In-game she's all woman. That Blake just hallucinates her as a woman is a poor excuse; there are none of the trademark signs of hallucination in-game when you see her naked and covered in mud. Not to mention that The Mines are nowhere near "the height of your psychotic break" at all.
wtf is the difference?
Did you play the game? His hallucinations are more frequent than ever. Remember the long chase sequence with heretics as you climb to the roof? He went in and out of the dreamscape like 3 or 4 times on his way to the top. Not to mention the hallucinations are crossing over into the actual environment. Down in the mines he sees the monster-priest irl. It's blatantly implied Val is a guy over and over, especially in his appearance. The ending is definitely not how he usually looks
Secondly, as I said, there is no indication that Blake is hallucinating Val as a woman. Quite the opposite: there is no messed up audio or video on the camera whenever you interact with her nor is Blake experiencing any kind of supernatural experience during the encounter.
Finally, no there is nothing with Val herself that implies that she is a man. Literally the only source of that is the fact that Knoth refers to her, via speech and text, as a he. Nothing else. Nada. Silch. And as I said, it is far more likely that Val didn't want to get treated as the rest of the women within the Cult and masqueraded as a man. Hence the loose-fitting robes and mannish haircut.
Yes? I don't know how you interpreted my words as saying the monster priest was Val? My point was that the priest/monster almost always appeared in dreams. Near the end and in the caves he was appearing in the real world environment. Blake's hallucinations were overlapping more instead of being confined to the dream sections.
Most real world hallucinations in Outlast 2 don't have telltale signs. Everytime you saw the priest there was no camera distortion, you could only tell it was a hallucination because it didn't make any sense for the priest to be there.
Val's appearance is the most telling. Most people(streamers ive watched) are confused about his sex when they first encounter him because of his voice and manly physical features
Nor is there anything about her that screams man either - I recognized her as a female from the moment she was ontop of Blake. Just like it was obvious that Marta was a woman. Do loose-fitting robes really confuse you that easily?
Maybe I'm a little bit more diverse in the people i hang around with - I don't need girls to be in Rapunzel-length hair for me to recognize them as female. Judging her by her short haircut is moronic.
You're totally on the money dude. She moves like a woman, talks like a woman, and - well... has breasts and a lack of a ♥♥♥♥? Yeah, shouts pretty loudly right into my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ face that she's female. That being said, in many other ways, the devs definietly seem to have intentionally obscured her gender. Now that there's a debate, they got all cheeky and replied with this Tumblr Post [68.media.tumblr.com]
Other than obvious genitalia, the most convincing for me was this diary entry [imgur.com]. The entries themselves aren't signed, but they appear to be written by the same individual over time. It seems to be implied that these pages are Val's diary.
In this particular one, she specifies that she dreamed that she was wet with the slit throat of a child (fetus?).
Either way just by having this conversation we're feeding into exactly what Red Barrels wants.
Officially, nobody can be wrong. It's however you see it. Great fan service, gets people talking about the game (even if the talking turns to shouting), and sjw community support I guess?
Jk there's 2
I like the fact that Val could be whatever you deem Val to be. As Red Barrels apparently said in reply to the question posed to them, "Val is Val." https://twitter.com/TheRedBarrels/status/857985504670879744
The hallucinations that all the women had about being pregnant and such were caused by the radio tower sending some weird signals that turned the population mad,I am pretty sure it's pretty much confirmed that the signals didn't reach or were at least significantly weaker in the mines so that would explain the reason for Val not hallucinating a fake pregnancy since she spend almost all of her time in the mines hidden from Knoth and his crew. Not to mention that the weird dreams she had could have been the start of her getting more and more affected by the radio tower signals.
Outlast the first followed in the footsteps of writer/directors such as Clive Barker and David Cronenberg and exploited the uncomfortable relationship which has always existed between sex and violence, or more broadly, sexuality and horror. The naked twins and their cold curiosity, patients with stitched-up barbie crotches, Dr Rick wearing no pants, etc etc.
The Whistleblower DLC went bolder still, starting with the evil scientist dude licking your face, moving on to the naked homosexual cannibal dude ("Don't look at us...I love him!" / "No! No! You were mine!"), the multiple-personality dude who seems to have both male and female identities, and finally The Groom, who believes he can make males into females and has very, erm, "complicated" notions about traditional relationships between men and women (so heterosexuality gets put through the wringer, too).
So we've already established Red Barrels are into upping the ante from release to release, right? So what do we get in Outlast 2? Answer: graphic childbirth, demon-like creatures fornicating with men from behind, and a CRAZY ARSED ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (who's also found religion). Sorry to put it so bluntly. But whatever you believe about transexuality, Val is definitely at the more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy end of the spectrum. HE IS CLEARLY SOMEONE WHO HAS NO IDEA WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥ HE REALLY IS.
Ever heard of Marilyn Manson? Look up the video for "The Dope Show". C'mon. Tell me nobody at Red Barrels has seen that clip, among numerous other examples I could cite. Red Barrels are completely and utterly playing with androgeny, and we're not really supposed to know quite "what" Val is, 'cause Val doesn't really know what Val is. All we really know is that Val is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BONKERS.
A final word on political correctness. Clive Barker, one of the two authors I cited above, is famously gay (and my personal all-time favourite writer, so you can throw the word "homophobia" out the window for starters). And yet he has made "horror" situations out of just about every conceivable form of sexuality and gender-bending imaginable. Horror is, first and foremost, about making people UNCOMFORTABLE. If it makes you UNCOMFORTABLE that you don't know what Val is exactly, then Red Barrels have achieved what they set out to achieve with the character.
I know I'm gonna pay for the "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" comment up above (it's a two syllable word, get over it...and yes, I did mostly use it for the "shock" value). I'm just tired of this society no longer discussing anything simply because every single psychological quirk on the planet suddenly needs to be treated with the utmost seriousness and "sensitivity". Human beings are complicated creatures, and need to be recognised as such. Trying to "normalise" everything is just flat-out denial, I'm afraid. By all means embrace "diversity", but don't try to pretend that absolutely everyone and everything is "normal", or else we'll have to condone pedophilia and beastiality next. Val is a violent nut-job with identity issues, and therefore a very, very creepy and dangerous character. Red Barrels knew this full well when they created the character, and in my opinion, they did a brilliant job of it.
So what?Literally everything you said proves nothing,we are here debating based on the clues we were given that point out that most likely val is a female (most likely not 100%) and your only claim us that just because of the twisted nature of the series Val has to be a man.Your are here saying that everyone should put their political correctness aside yet you are the biggest politically correct snowflake in this whole thread lol.You are literally trying to make her a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because you feel like it when all the evidence points otherwise and you call us politically correct snowflakes?!?!
