Are you a part of the England faction? If you are considered a "free captain" then you will not be able to directly hire British troops.

If you are, you will need a garrison and the appropriate buildings for each units type. You can also change troops in your party by using a drillmaster (you can hire him at the palace after becoming governor) to retrain units in your party.

Oh! thank you Sinsling, Yes I'm a free captain, but I want to join The England faction, Can I still do this or do I have to reliquish my to join a faction?. I found the England faction leader but no option comes up to join. I guess I have to raise my relations with them?

I do not know of a way to give up being a free captain. You would have to join them before taking a port and hope the faction leader lets you govern a city. You get this option by having a high enough relation with them.
I think if you joined a nation before and then quit to be independent you could come back by talking to the leader but if you never did that then :s.

I've just reloaded from a previous save, so I have no town. Found out you join a faction through the notice board thingy!? that's weird lol. but now since joining England, I can no longer do personal missions for leaders?, they just basicaly say hello, goodbye. The option no longer comes up!. I need renown and moneies!!

You can take fighting quests form the message board for renown, as for money. Trade, trade, trade. You can make 100s of thousands very quickly when you find the right chain of ports.

I'll have to look into trading, as I just have it set to buy/sell my stocks right away...., I have heard it's the best way to make money :/

You can leave your production on auto-sell. You don't need to micro your buildings to make enough money to weigh down a manila.
