Best Pirate RPG ever?

I've seen it listed as such on two "best pirate games of all time" lists. Its been a while since i played it but I remember it being AWFUL and I love everything piratey. Very strange to hear how good it is

If it was just caribbean you played then this is the game that came from it after they gave up the ghost because it was so bad. You should have blood and gold available in your library if that's the case.Before they were all fired by the parent company, the project was completed with existing glitches sorted. Since the beginning it was expanded and a half decent storyline introduced. If you have a look at the announcements and scroll down a ways all the info as to what happened.

If you like the fire & sword type framework of games then its ok. But it isn't mount and blade at all, it just uses the machanics this was the ultimate reason for it closing as the mechanics are too old.
The alternative starts mod expands your choices of starts and also adds a couple of custom ships and weapons and armour and a new faction. If you don't like the early grind I can recommend the kenway pirate start. ;)

I would recommend the game if on sale.

As far as other games go I've played risen, sid meiyers and port royal and its better than them imo.
