If you like the fire & sword type framework of games then its ok. But it isn't mount and blade at all, it just uses the machanics this was the ultimate reason for it closing as the mechanics are too old.
The alternative starts mod expands your choices of starts and also adds a couple of custom ships and weapons and armour and a new faction. If you don't like the early grind I can recommend the kenway pirate start. ;)
I would recommend the game if on sale.
As far as other games go I've played risen, sid meiyers and port royal and its better than them imo.
