At any rate, the best thing of DR1 compared to not just DR2 but pretty much anything after it is that DR1 is a story about characters while the latter games are generally games about an impossible setting and character quirks. Characters and their quirks are not the same. Hina is forever tied with donuts, but what makes Hina unique is not because she likes donuts. She's typical sunny girl and donuts just happen to be her favorite thing while she's spreading that sunshine. In the later games, if a character like Hina exists, the focus would be reversed. That is, a later version of Hina would have the focus to be donuts and her sunshine is accidental effect from donuts. Every DR1 character easily falls into predefined, typical tropes, but that didn't define who they are. This is very different from the later installments where the character's trope is exactly who they are.
I think DR1 had a better cast of characters for the most part. I didn't dislike anyone in DR2, but I was pretty indifferent towards most of them. I liked (nearly) the entire cast of DR1. Although, the few that I liked in DR2 I *really* liked.
Some of the trials in DR1 were annoying in the sense that I knew the contradiction, but the correct way of *presenting* it was a bit obscure. I never felt that way in DR2. Although a couple of the puzzles in DR2 seemed a bit unfair logically, I think DR2's trials were better.
DR2's minigames were more fun in my opinion. I even think the Improved Hangman thing was fine, except for that obnoxious "Cause of Death" one in case 5.
I prefer the story of DR2. The problem with DR1 is that you play as a side character. Makoto only has his moment in the spotlight right at the very end - and even then it feels a bit contrived. I seriously don't understand why they didn't just make Kyoko the protagonist (or at least swap Makoto and Kyoko's roles).
DR2 kind of has that problem as well, but to a much smaller extent. Hajime always seems to be guided along by Nagito and Chiaki but it still feels as if he's a pivotal part of the trials (for the most part, at least). And the narrative itself has a much better twist in my opinion.
dangan1 had however had the more fun trialgames i'd say - i did not rly like the improved hangman for example (even though the first one was too easy) - dangan2 had more trialgames which most news were cool aswell
I'm not 100% through Trial 2 yet and I want to strangle Hiyoko AND Nagito. Hiyoko is worthless and Nagito so far is just a plot device and antithesis of Makoto.
I do like Hajime also, but Hajime and Makoto both have different strengths imo.
