What do I do Hangman's Gambit

I read the instructions and have finished the first game but am really confused. On the first trial/instance of this minigame popping up and I already know what the word is, but can't tell how I'm supposed to do it.

I shoot letters and they're added to my stock, I can make other letters bigger but I'm lost beyond that

Say the word is cat

Collect C, Shoot C

Collect A, Shoot A

Collect T, Shoot T

You must collect one letter and connect it to the other - Then do shoot it by LMB.
