How Disturbing is This Game? (Serious responses only, please) (No Spoilers either)
I've been considering getting this game for years. Since a lot of people compare it to Ace Attorney, a series I'm a big fan of, I thought this game and I would get along nicely. It seems to emphasize plot and characters, which is something that's important to me in a game.

The issue is that I'm a little weird about horror. Sometimes I can read dark psychological thrillers with no consequences (I know few of you have probably heard of this, but the visual novel Lucid 9 is a prime example of what I mean). I can also look at some disturbing images with few consequences. However, roughly two years ago when I played Doki Doki Literature Club, there was a particular scene that messed with my head real bad. I won't say it caused me to have PTSD because I have a feeling it would be insulting to people who have been professionally diagnosed with it. It seemed eerily similar, though. The one experience alone caused me to experience severe panic, nightmares (and I never had nightmares), and fear of my loved ones dying. I had a hard time sleeping, and using my phone or laptop made me anxious. My symptoms have thankfully faded over time, but I'm worried that something in this game might trigger something similar.

Is there any way someone could describe some of the disturbing content in this game without going too far into spoiler territory?

Thanks.

this is just my opinion but i thought doki doki literature club was much more psychological disturbing then Danganronpa because most of the deaths in Danganronpa are kinda comical over the top, so it dosn't really seem as realistic or disturbing as doki was, but this game is definitely dark i really dont know the scenes in doki that disturbed you but the only thing in Danganronpa is murder and they dont really show close up distubing images of the bodies and there also isnt r*** anything like that in this, i remember when i finished doki i felt sick for days and i dident have any of those feeling when i finshed Danganronpa, but thats just my personal experience.

Danganronpa isn't as disturbing as DDLC, like, at all.
To give you a comparison, DDLC is like Saw movies and Danganronpa would be more like The Dead Walking : some blood, violence, but no psychologic deal here.
So run and buy the trilogy !

I'm not familiar with the game mentioned in OP but Danganronpa is just kind of a silly, murder mystery game. Yes it's about teenagers getting murdered but more in a dark comedy kind of way, not psychological horror.

some of the most obviously disturbing parts of ddlc were the cutscenes of the dead bodies. honestly, in danganronpa there are pretty similar cutscenes when you discover bodies (since it's a murder mystery game) but of course i can't really tell whether or not you'd be severely disturbed by it. ddlc tries much, much harder to be creepy and traumatising with its imagery, but if you are really sensitive to that kind of thing i could definitely see similarities. like i'm playing danganronpa 2 right now and there was just a scene where one of the characters hung themselves on video. if you're ok with that kind of thing though i would say go for it – danganronpa isn't a psychological horror like ddlc.
Yeah it's a cartoon game, dude. Grow up.

If you can handle r/CursedComments then you're OK. It's more dark humor than anything else. Zero Escape trilogy is great too. :ffxiichocobo:

Thanks, folks. From your descriptions, it looks like I shouldn't have many issues playing this game at all. I missed my chance this sale, but I'll look into it further in the summer.

It depends on what you deem as disturbing. The visuals, music, and gameplay do their job pretty well, but it's nothing you'd be having nightmares about.

Imo, DDLC is waayyy more psycologically disturbing than any of DR... The main three games do have a good bit of gore, but the blood is colored hot pink so your brain won't translate it to be overwhelmingly gruesome. Not to mention, the flat, 2D character models make it almost comedic opposed to the detailed bodies of DDLC. I wouldn't say it's anything to have nightmares about especially if you've experienced the disturbing imagery in DDLC. If you're still uneasy about the games or any surprises, I'd suggest looking up Leon's execution on YT, since it's the first one in Trigger Happy Havoc because that just about sets the standard for the series.

I did start playing DR1, and while I haven't finished it I can say that nothing traumatizing has happened to me yet (can't say the same thing about the characters, though).

I admit that a lot of the trauma from DDLC is gone, thankfully. But regardless, I don't think I would have been triggered by anything in DR before or after playing DDLC (though Chihiro's corpse might have been rough if I hadn't already seen worse in DDLC).

It's actually been a pretty fun experience, and I hope I can find time to finish it soon.

I'm glad you like it, there's definitely a lot to unpack and Chihiro's corpse was a bit up there for me but after seeing Yuri ahem.. stab herself.. in DDLC, it wasn't too bad on my scale.

Even if most of the trauma from past games is gone, it's always good to get a few second or third opinions just to make sure you're not spending money on an experience you don't wanna think about ever again. I know I would.

Regardless, I hope you have a much better experience with DR than DDLC.. As long as you don't let the despair get to you, I have hope you will enjoy it as much as the rest of the community.

Hello! I dont know if you already got to the first murder scene now White Fire, but as the people here say, its similar to DDLC but not the same emotions.
I played DDLC several times to discover every dialogue way and options (and yes, its a preeeeety dark game) that left me a taste of "ugh good game but omg".
I just started playing danganronpa (just have 11 hours of playing right now) but I watched the anime years ago and I know the plot to the end. Its not the same emotions that DDLC makes you feel, this is more "cartoon" murders and situations, but what it has is a very well written plot that makes you discover interesting things of human behavior, so this game is more of a psychological / investigate / novel game with almost nothing of "horror" but indeed has death scenes (cartoonish way to die) and some "human" deep parts/messages. So, dont expect a DDLC try-to-be-realistic-horror kind of game BUT, its not ponies and rainbows either haha. (And yes, the blood is painted pink so it doesnt make a big impact either)
Greetings!
