For more adventure/gameplay, what I've played so far of 428 Shibuya Scramble is REALLY cool. 428 is more decision-based and there's also reading, but the concept is very interesting and immersive.
It seems we have similar tastes :D I played S;G & S;G 0 on the PS Vita, and I recently played through 428 Shibuya Scramble here on Steam. I really enjoyed those games, though for the most part it felt like the "puzzles" were much more subtle, as in understanding what choices were impeding progress.
I've also heard some people mention Higurashi no naku koro ni, but for one, i've seen the anime, and then I have a feeling that it's mostly going to be story telling with mainly avoiding choices that impede progress, compared to the strong player involvement in dangan/nonary series.
Mind you though that Never 7 (first game) is the weakest one (not bad per se, but for veterans might be kinda bland). Ever 17 is good but beware - whole story is really long to read. And finally Remember 11 is IMHO the best one, the thriller which made me really hooked even considering one big... shortcoming which I can't tell you without spoiling the story.
As for Higurashi - yes, just like you I've seen the anime earlier many years ago and was thinking exactly the same. Why should I come back to something I already know, but... well, when I tried it I was sucked in again. It's really solid example of psychological horror and all comes to great execution of all the details. Even remembering (more or less) what's going on I felt shivers on my back many times. Granted you need to download a fan patch with voiceover and graphics ripped from PS3 version, because without them the final result is really much more modest. And yeah, it is a story telling but from the eyes of Keichi (at least for first three parts) so it's not so hard to get involved :)
@lewriczin: In the store page, I noticed some of the reviews mentioned something about requiring 7th chapter or mod/DLC or something in order to fully enjoy (it sounded like it changed some stuff for the previous chapters).. Is this what you're talking about with the graphics / voiceover patch?

You can use it to patch even if you have only one chapter available. And it's well scripted, if everything works correctly then the process is completely automatic.
It's adding all the graphics and voiceovers from PS version (strongly recommended) Also, recently Ryukishi07 had "upgraded" the BGMs from the game... long story short the "upgrade" is controversial and the patch also allows you to revert it and get the original soundtrack (recommended)
Ah, and I forgot to add it last time - the original japanese R11 promo video https://youtu.be/ck6-sw-Z798 :)
