Coins are used for the toy machine that gives you those items in the capsules. Those capsules have presents that you give to your classmates.
I've only played the Vita version, but if it's a direct port from the Vita version to PC, then you can also use the coins to unlock music, art, movies, etc. to view / listen in the game as well... an art / music / movies gallery of sorts.
Basically, it will come to a point where you cant be selfish and you have to make a descsion that you wouldnt rationally make, and even goes against the main goal of the game, its harder than i thought to explain without spoiling what it is, but when the time comes you'll know, Just be really keen and know that something is not what it seems!
