Ginger Island Rain Gems?

I didn't finish the rain bird gem thing within the year I was on and when the next year started I went in to finish it and I couldn't see the gems I had already placed and I can't interact with the pedestals. I can't put my last gem on the pedestal, and I can't remove old gems, although I get the little plus sign when my cursor hovers over the right spot. Help?
