Steel axe reverted to regular axe

Hello
Not sure how or when but I’m in the middle of summer of my first year. I went to chop up a tree stump and it said my axe wasn’t strong enough. I checked and sure enough my axe was not a steel axe anymore. Is there anyway to get the steel axe back without going through the upgrade process?
