Friendship points not working. Hearts stay grayed out. PLEASE HELP :(

No mater how many liked gifts or times I talk to one of the NPC's the heart meter doesn't go up at all and I don't know what to do. I've tried uninstalling the game, starting a new game but nothing seems to work. I'm hoping someone has had this problem to help me out because I can't find anything on the internet about it.

Which one? Is it one of the dateable characters? If so then you need to be aware that to unlock their hearts further you need to date them. Then marry them to unlock their hearts even further.

if you only just started the farm, it takes a while to earn the first heart. You need 2500 friendship points to gain a heart. LOVED gifts give more heart points then LIKED gifts. Neutral gifts give 0 heart points.
Disliked gifts remove heart points.
Heart points fade away if you don't talk to them for several days.
Giving them a LOVED gift on their birthday gives you the most heart points.
Completing their quests from the board in front of the store gives heart points too.
Talking to everyone during special events and fairs also gives you a small amount of heart points.

If you don't see a HEART appear above their head when you give a gift, the the gift was not LOVED. Everyone has different tastes for what they like/love. See the wiki for a full list of gifts.

It goes for both the single characters and non dateable characters. No matter how many liked or loved gifts or quests I complete for them the heart meter doesn't fill. They all stay at zero hearts and the red within the hearts doesn't fill up or even show. So im not sure what's going on. I appreciate @soaringfreedom and @Amberbaum for responding. I've never done a discussion like this so I wasn't even sure if anyone would respond. Thank you and if anyone still knows a solution to this problem let me know :)

also hearts dont appear until the next day after you sleep, so if you look right after you give them a gift, you wont see a difference.

If all else fails, try installing SMAPI and the CJB cheats mod, which allows you to adjust all relationship hearts. If that doesnt work, then there REALLY is something wrong.

I waited until the next day and gifted them the max amount of gifts and did it again on the 2nd week but it still shows that i'm at zero hearts with them. It doesn't even show that i'm making progress by showing that the heart is filling up.

so try the CJB cheat and make everyone love you.
Also there is a mod to stop hearts decay, and I think there maybe a mod that stops hearts, makes everyone dislike you. Dont know if you use mods, but if you do , check them all for side effects.

I'm using that mod right now and so far I can at least gain hearts now with the characters even if it is me putting it manually. I wish my game wouldn't do that but this mod does help. Thank you for helping me, I was getting frustrated lol.

It's worth noting that the hearts don't visibly fill up. A heart is either full or empty, and each one takes 250 points to fill. A gift typically gives under 100 points, so you generally won't see progress in only a week, especially early on when most gifts you have access to will only be worth 20-45 points.

If you use the CJB cheat, doesn't that skip events? Like, you miss out on the heart events for all the characters, including those in SVE, Riverside, and the other expansions?

The same thing happened to me with Eliot, when I give him a gift he doesn't even mark it. Is there a way to fix it without a mod? I've tried breaking up with him but it's still the same.
