Breaking a chest destroyed all items inside

When I was playing yesterday, me and my boyfriend had our items at a chest and we were trying to figure out how to break it so we could move the chest. However, when I destroyed the chest, which was full of items, all of the items inside disappeared, and the chest only was recovered. I'm assuming this wasn't intended and is a bug.

We were not able to replicate this bug.

I'm playing on Windows 10 64-bit / Windowed Mode.

You shouldn't be able to destroy a chest with items inside. Empty it, then destroy it.

Yup, that's where the bug happened though. I was able to, and that caused me to lose all the items that were inside.

tell me what you did / were doing so i can try to recreate it. me and my friends find ourselves with 2 extra sets of tools after some of them crashed and rejoined. (their inventories were reset upon rejoining)

I don't exactly remember or understand what happened to be honest, but we were trying to break two chests (which were parallel to each other), and it wasn't working until suddenly the left chest broke open by one of us (think it was me), and the chest item dropped but the contents inside of the box didn't. Took a bit to realize what had happened but when we did we'd already went to bed and it was too late to restart the day.

We tried to recreate it but it never worked again for whatever reason, was just really weird. Hope you have better luck with that.

P.S: This was in Multiplayer beta, which definitely had something to do with it. Another thing to note is that we live kinda far apart so maybe lag was the issue?

I had the same problem! I was alone when it happened (my boyfriend was in another part of the farm), and I was busy sprucing up the house. I accidentally broke one of the chests we had most of our mining materials (I had thought you couldn't break them because there were items in there). But when I placed it back, all the contents were gone!

I haven't tried to replicate the bug, we've just been cautious to not let it happen again, but it did strike me as very weird it happened in the first place...

Edit: It happened again today, same effects and all. It seems to have occurred when I hit the chest with a pickaxe. There was a second or two delay before the chest pop'd up with all the items inside disappearing. I was not the host, if that helps.

Had this happen to me tonight. Playing with my GF on a LAN. She was trying to move the empty chest next to the chest she broke, hit it with the wood axe, and hit the axe full of items, and broke it, deleting all the items. She was host. She was really mad, so we alt-f4 to reset the day and save the items.

Probably should add: She's Win10, playing fullscreen, I'm Win7 playing fullscreen. No mods/smapi.

I was playing alone, but Snow described the same thing I was seeing:

I was trying to move a set of chests, which were next to each other. I emptied one and tried to hit it with my pickaxe. It would sometimes instead break the full chest, destroying all of the items inside. It seemed to happen when I did not have any square selected by the tool hit marker. This happened multiple times, but only when one of the chests was empty.

I also had a flower barrel next to an empty chest I was trying to break, but I hit the barrel instead. I got a chest in my inventory and the barrel was gone.

This occured on the farm on a non-event day and different times of day. I am playing on PC, Windows 10, full screen mode. I was playing solo on the latest Multiplayer beta branch.

This happened to me and my host about 2 weeks ago I think? He was reorganizing things because he likes his farm aesthetically pleasing. There were 2 chests, and he forgot to check one to take everything out when he hit it with a tool. Don't remember which tool, and he probably made a report back then since he takes note of any bugs we encounter. Anyway, it popped into his inventory but when we realized it should have had items, he placed it back down to find it empty. Fortunately, it was still the same day, so we re-loaded the day and saved our items. We are more careful when moving chests now, just in case.

I just had this happen with an axe and the chest I needed to get the boat supplies for mainline story quest.

You can always just load the previous save by either not saving or if you saved already restoring the _old save.
