does a mod exist to pause time if you stop doing anything
I'm not sure how it would work, but I really want to play this game to go to sleep to, but I constantly doze off and wake up passed out. I would love if there was a mod so if you stop moving and do nothing for 5-30 seconds the time passing either stops or is slowed down so much time won't pass.

The mod is called EnergyTime.
If you don't spend Energy - time don't go by.
If you need to waste some time a little, there's an option to resume normal time flow for awhile with a key press.
pretty sure the game pauses if it loses focus from the OS now (it seems to pause the game when alt-tabebd now).

might work if you set your steam deck to just turn off/go to sleep after 10 seconds depending on how those functions work exactly on the steam deck.

Just get used to ESc to inventory if you go afk and switching windows?
if you don't want to mod the game, then the best thing you could do is to always sell something at the start of the day. Even 0g-items will trigger the earnings counter at the end.

Though generally it's probably better to not play, when you're already nearly falling asleep.
First, these good people telling you to sell something in the big box are dead on. You will fall asleep at 2:00 a.m. but putting something (anything) will trigger the sales summary screen at the end of the day. This occurs before the game saves the day's progress, so when you doze off, then wake up and find yourself at the sales summary, you can close out of the game without saving that day if you want to.

But what if you forget to drop something into the big box, and then fall asleep in real life. In that case, you will fall asleep at 2:00 a.m., but without the sales summary providing a stop point, the game saves, and you go right into the next day. The next day will start with you in bed, and if you don't wake up in real life and do something, you'll be in a loop until you do wake up.

When you finally do wake up and do something, if you check your mail, you will find a letter from Harvey saying you fell asleep somewhere and someone brought you in. He'll charge you 1000 gold, but if you don't have the gold, he'll patch you up pro bono.

That's the best case scenario if you don't put something into the big box. Worst case scenario is you're in the mines or somewhere else dangerous and you get your ass killed. Then you loose possessions, and I think you have to pay someone, too.

So all in all, in your situation, dropping something into the big sales box is the best safeguard against falling asleep playing. You could install mods, but those are always inherently risky. You never know what other unwanted effect they will have; they can crash whenever there is an update; and there is always the chance the mod developer is going to lose interest and quit maintaining it.

He doesn't go AFK, he's playing in bed and falls asleep mid-game. XD

it's not quite what you ask for, but this will prevent days going on forever.

another non-mod solution is to make sure you put at least one thing in the shipping bin every day, as that will cause the income screen to appear at the end of the day which requires a click to close.

needs to be automatic or doesn't help really. as said in my OP post. with no inputs for a set time, time stops until you start giving it inputs again
The TimeSpeed mod suggested above will cover what you ask for, at least partially. You can set an artificial automatic time-freeze to any time of the in-game day, IE, You could set it so that it freezes at 1:50 am, never actually reaching 2am, giving you a chance to get your affairs in order and sleep in bed. That's what I use it for- I set it to 1:00, And that's my cut-off to finish whatever activity I was in the middle of and get to the bed without fear of passing out.

Edit: Didn't see a link for it, so here: www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/169
very interesting. that is a decent idea as long as I don't take advantage of it!

And as long as the mod developer continues to maintain it.
