HELP! Game Won't Open [Mac]
I haven't played in a while and just updated the game the other day. When I click "Play" through Steam it looks just like the game is opening and then the steam button says "Stop" which implies that the game is open. However, it did not open the game. Ive looked at other forms about this but they are all for PC and with slightly different problems.

I have attached screenshots of terminal, my "Application Support/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Stardew Valley" folder, and my Stardew Steam page.

Step one: Verify your game files: Right-click on the game in your Steam library and get Properties, Local Files, Verify.

Might help, might not, but it's always the first thing to try.

Step two: Make a backup of your save folder (just in case): https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Saves#Mac

Step three: Try this:

Stardew Valley is not launching on Mac

Run the Terminal application (if you’re not sure how, click the magnifying glass in the top right, type Terminal, and select the first result). In the window that appears, paste in the following line (CHANGE “USER” to your username) and press enter:

sudo chown -v “$USER” ~/.config
This should correct the ownership of a folder that Stardew Valley needs to write under.

You’ll probably be prompted for your password by the above command, and then it’ll output something like /Users/yournamehere/.config. Try running Stardew Valley again, and hopefully it’ll work this time.

You may or may not need to remove the quotes from the above code string:

sudo chown -v $USER ~/.config

Again, Might help, might not, but it's the next thing to try.

What machine are you running SDV on? Intel chip? M1? M2?
What OS are you using? Post-Catalina? Some version of Sonoma?

I followed another guide that said to verify that the game files were installed correctly through Steam and that fixed it! Thanks for your support though!

Hi, I have the same issue, I tried sudo chown -v “$USER” ~/.config but I am getting the error illegal user name and the game still won't start...

You have to replace "$USER" with the exact user name you use.
