There used to be tiebreaker rounds when it came to the fishing tournament but it involved a battle to the death with fishing rods due to ancient Pelican Town bylaws that were never altered or overturned in the current age. But after so many rival anglers ended up slain at the hands of Willy every couple of years when a tie happened, Mayor Lewis wisely decided that anytime someone tied with Willy, Willy just automatically wins. It was the only way to stop the rising body count.

I thought 5 was the required amount of fish to win, otherwise only catching 4 or less would result in Willy winning with 5 fish. Every time I caught 5 fish during the competition, I took home first prize. Was this something else that changed in 1.6?

Ya i kept on using the empty ones to and loosing then alt f4 out to try again. So after a couple of try's i just went down to willy's pond and won the first time. My fishing skill was already lvl 6 thou

The worst is when you catch that fifth fish with about 2-3 seconds left, but it takes so long for the game to process the fish-catching animation that the time runs out, you don't get credit for it, and you lose. That's happened to me at least twice now. Sometimes even if you execute your end perfectly, you don't get the five bites fast enough because of algae, delayed bites, whatever.

well you can always do what I do. I use the CJB Cheat mod to make fishing instant catch. And I always win because i catch 12+ fish.

One thing I've done is eat some food that boosts my fishing skill before going into the event. I'm not sure if it actually helped, but I like to think it did....

It does, higher fishing level decreases the maximum time to get a bite. But you don't need any food to win, you can win the competition with the fish skill of 9 (probably even lower than that), provided you don't fumble your catches. And level 9 is really easy to get by Winter, in fact a lot of people will have already reached level 10 by then. Fishing is the first skill most people max out and it's the easiest one to max by far.

Fishing skill of 9 is good... but fishing skill of 12 is better. I think the speed boost does help, since there's less down time between strikes.

Oddly enough, in this playthrough my farming skill is higher than my fishing. That usually doesn't happen.... But I also know people who hate the fishing minigame, so they just don't do it. Or they use a mod to bypass it entirely.

and some of us have less than co-operative hands and can't do the fishing mini-game so wouldn't be interested in playing the game without mods (but since I'm cheating no one but myself, it'd be pretty.. petty.. to call somebody a cheater for using mods that even Ape doesn't have an issue with)

Yeah but you don't come here and try to act like smarty pants because you're cheating, no? There's a difference between using a cheat mod because you lack manual dexterity, and bragging you can do something other people cannot because you cheat. One is understandable, the other is just weird.

Imagine you are struggling with something and sharing your experience, and then some bozo comes to you and says "just cheat lmao easy". Actually, no need to imagine, that's bascialy what happened here It's just a completely useless and tone deaf thing to say, like what is even the point. It's not like that's anything to brag about, so what gives?
