A difficulty mod is necessary if you don't want to be a millionaire by the first year, but none exist anymore.
That just makes it take a year and a half instead of a year.
Some mods added taxes and a loan while changing combat difficulty, but they no longer exist.

I don't think so :)
Stardew Valley is in unique position since it needs little to no effort for mod _user_ (slam SMAPI, drop unpacked mods into mod folder and you're good).
But it also needs unusual effort from modders themselves for anything bigger than Content Patcher package, due to necessity to do some decompiling then compiling of the game itself.
Give the modders some time to become acquainted with 1.6 update features - they'll sure have something to surprise you with afterwards. After all, modders need to play the game too :) No point in modding it otherwise :)
Notably, people basically gifted me an idea of more lifelike economy which (unlike shoehorned taxation they mention left and right) would actually represent a challenge on the road to the big money.
It will need no less than a week just for sketching basics on which whole system would be built. And that's after getting Perfection (at last...), just to be sure that I didn't forgot/missed anything (like smoked fish being both Artisan Good AND a Fish currently, which, I believe, is more of a bug).
3-13 days to actually design whole system.
And only then journey into coding an actual mod MIGHT begin...
like seasonal cute characters. it overhauls all the character sprites and portraits in stardew valley

Wow... tell that to all the modders stil working hard every free moment they have.
Yes some of the modders moved on over the years but alot of them are stil working to get them mods working for 1.6 and those who did are stil tinkering with them giving out updates every few days.
1.6 Was a huge overhaul in modding and altho it made it much easyer to make a mod in general, that dosn't mean its also easyer to adjust an exsisting mod to the new rules.
Hey, even SDV itself is not perfected yet, hence an upcoming patch probebly next week wich....... probebly wil break some mods so the modders need to adjust to the changes.
Patience Padawan!
This completely depends on what your looking for.
Expansion mods like East Scarp, Expanded, Ridgeside?
QOL mods like show item sell prices, automatic gates, data layers?
More crops forage and so on like Cornupia or Wildflour mods?
More artisan goods like Wildflour again or craft brewing or.....
Or aesthetic ones
Or...... 140 new fish in your game to catch :p
The possibilities are endless so if you want decent recommendations you need to be more specific
That doesn't mean "the modding community abandoned the game"; In the last couple of weeks since 1.6 launched I went from 100ish (1.6 compatible) mods all the way to 418 already. With multiple major projects teasing massive upcoming updates or whole new projects.
New mods like Mount Vapius , Cornucopia, Cape Stardew and Downtown Zuzu are quickly joining the other three major players in expansion mods like Stardew Expanded, Ridgeside and East Scarp; there are whole other mods still waiting to release like Sunberry which is due out in a couple of months. There are mods for everyone, and the community is working really hard to update them all so long as they have permission.
No idea how I didn't bumped onto it earlier. It makes so many things viable, including (already-in-decline) crab pot centric setups and river farm!
