Fishing question
Hi, I’ve just started to play this game and I am absolutely loving it so far. My hobby in real life is fishing, so it’s brilliant.
A couple questions. When I eat trout soup, my fishing skill goes up 1. Is it that easy to get your fishing skill to 10, just eat 10 soups?
Also after I eat the soup, a timer of 5 mins appears at top of the screen. What is this timer for?
And can I manually save the game?
Thanks everyone

buffs from food do not stack if you eat multiples of the same food, all it does is rest the time for the buff effect, Buffs only last for a set number of minutes, as you saw 5 minutes. The only exception is buffs from some advanced clothing items from some mods.
So no you can not get fishing skill level 10 by eating 10 soups.

No you can not manually save the game, the game saves when you go to bed, so make sure to sleep AND let the next day load before you exit the game. If you close the game before the save finishes, you lose the days work.

Here's something you'll probably want to read if you want to be the ULTRA master of fishing in the game like you are in real life:

https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Fishing#Bar_Size

Drill down into all the links there, but the short version is:

Save flounder, midnight carp and midnight squid and put them in ponds
Use Qi seasoning for seafoam pudding
Enchant your iridium fishing rod with "Master"
Be friends with Linus

Buffs do not stack, the soup or food that gives buffs they only last during the timer up the right corner then buff goes away.
The fishing buff helps making catching some fish a little easier. But no you level up the fishing by fishing not by eating the soup. The soup gives a temp buff. Even at level 10 you can use the buff.
If you find fishing hard you can always use mods but I like the fishing, it does get easier as you level and end up with the better rod.
You can only save the game by going to bed and sleeping for the night, it will save then, Don't close the game or exit til next morning. When you load in will be 6am again. If you play coop then you can sleep in anyones bed on the farm.

food items are a temporary buff, and the fishing buff basically just makes your line cast farther and the fishing bar bigger so its only really needed when you are doing a bit of fishing or fishing something difficult like Catfish on rainy spring / fall days

^...and reduces the max time between bites. The faster catches offset the price of soup. The faster skill gain, and thus faster fishing, is profit.

ps the timer is real-time and is not interrupted by pauses the same way game-time does.

Me too. I've been fishing all my life and it I love the fishing in this game also. There are so many types and difficulty levels of fish as well as the different quests and challenges that go with them.

Willy is my favourite villager!
