Edit to add: You'll need to build a cabin for the other player first! They are built instantly when you buy them from Robin and they are super cheap.
Another edit to add: Alternatively, you can start a new game with cabins for other players already included if you:
1.- Start a new online hosted game from the Co-op button on the start menu.
2.- During character and farm creation, to your left it will ask you if you want to start with player cabins. Up to 4 max.
3.- Start your game.
4.- Exit and save game. Now load the same file but this time from Single Player.
5.- Repeat aforementioned steps to Start Local Co-op
6.- ???????
7.- Profit!

this can go step by step to start split screen mode
Alternatively, with multiple PCs, Steam also offers the Remote Play-feature, where the owner of the game can stream the screen to other PCs and then you're pretty much playing the game as if you're sitting on one PC (so it's possible to play splitscreen like that).
