My trinket is attacking something in my farm?
Hello guys!

I have recently come back to the game to finish stuff from 1.6 onwards. One of the new things for me was the trinkets, which I really enjoy. My fave from the ones I've got so far is the Ice Rod (that shoots ice orbs to enemies and stuns them) and have it equipped at almost all times.

Now to the title of the post: I was running towards the top left corner of my farm (right next to where Grandpa's shrine is), where I have a few lightning rods, to collect battery packs, when my ice rod activated for some reason and started shooting towards a tree outside of my farm...? I don't really know why. I've filmed a little clip with the new Steam Recording feature, but I don't know how to share it here.

It is a mistery to me what it could be attacking, as it is outside my screen...
Has anyone noticed this?

For context, I'm on winter Year 12 and my farm is the standard one and I have not enabled monsters on my farm in any capacity and I do not use any mods, it is a vanilla file.

Editing to add the screenshots (thanks to NBOX21 for the information)

Here you can see the snake like creature in the far top left corner of the farm before being impacted by the ice orb:

And here you can see it being impacted, with the ice shards animation:

I found out I can embed Youtube videos here, so I uploaded the clip:

It is kinda creepy, isn't it? I had not considered the possibility of using mods to get up there for myself, I didn't know people could do that. My mod knowledge is really limited.
But the thing is: this creature can be stunned, but not damaged, as the Ice Rod works but the Magic Quiver does not react to it... I could maybe try to use the slingshot? But I want to find out what it is before trying to harm it.
For sure! This whole scenario has mystery/horror written all over it. There is something in the tree, that the farmers trinket identifies as a threat. It disappears, and then reappears...

Maybe it's the tree! O.O

I have managed to add a video to my original post. Before this I was playing normally, just minding my farmer business... Then that happened and it really spooked me! I kind of keep far from that corner now... Is somebody cursing my farm with an unknown menacing creature? Could it be the Witch? Is Grandpa mad at me? I just want answers lol

Well something is there... You can even hear the splish sound.

I wonder if Queen Neferneferuaten is somehow spying through that tree :brownchicken:

exchange the frostrod for a quiver? that does dmg instead of freezing.
or tryed to sling it? preferable with explosive ammo?

I have tried this. Magic quiver does not react to it at all, nothing happens. Same with the frog, but that does not surprise me as its range is shorter. It's just the ice rod that reacts to the thing on top of the tree. I have not shot at it with a slingshot, though. I am a bit afraid to try tbh lol.

Don't worry, if it is Queen Neferneferuaten spying on you the worst that will happen is a giant really dark "OOOUCH" followed by a 3.5 earthquake. :brownchicken:

it's either the wizard or Linus spying on you... :steammocking:

I wouldn't be surprised, if it's just a hidden enemy model, that got changed into managing some thinge on the farms and the dev might've forgotten about making sure, that it isn't treated like a monster regarding those trinkets. There's still the option of it being something else, but using existing classes to build upon is a common strategy in game dev to lower the time to implement new features, especially if the player can't tell the difference anyway.

And even if newer save files have gotten rid of these things, there might still be some traces left from older save files.

But that's just an idea, so could be something different as well^^

I'm friends with them both so I would not mind if that's the case lol

I'd love to know for sure! It just really puzzled me to encounter something ingame that was not talked about on the wiki or anywhere else. If it is not a bug and it is actually something hidden we don't know about yet, I'd be thrilled. We also haven't had something that shoots from afar without our control like the Ice Rod until 1.6 update, so I now wonder if it's always been like this or if it's new.

You could ask in the speedrunner community. They've usually the best knowledge about everything and if they don't know anything, they're usually the fastest ones to find out^^

I have two thoughts on this.

The first, is that since you say you have a slime hutch, maybe somewhere along the line a slime glitched out of the hutch and the game just stuck it at map coords 0,0 not really knowing what else to do with it.

The second, is that this is where the developers put a spawn point for if you have monster spawns enabled. It was probably done a long time ago, well before trinkets were added, and completely slipped everyone's mind to check that one corner. Even if you don't have monsters enabled, they may still be up there, just inactive. The Wiki is having a little lie down meaning I can't really refresh my memory regarding how the monster attacks work, so take with an appropriate sized grain of salt.

Edit: Have you tried switching to the trinket that attacks enemies? I forget what it's called now, but if it's like a glitched out slime you could potentially kill it and solve the mystery.

This is really simple to solve.

1: If you dont know mods, create a back up of your main SDV folder and install this mod with the instructions provided: https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/3900?tab=files
You can then test by going out of bounds to the location and simply either remove the mods or delete the entire folder and replace it with your backup folder.

2: If you you dont want to install SMAPi then just create a backup of your game folder, and download the above mod and unzip and put the files directly n the main game folder overwriting all, with no need then for SMAPI, test by going out of bounds to the location then you can delete the folder and replace with yous backup.

3: If you do not want to do the above 2, can you place a mega bomb to see if it destroys the tree blocking the line of sight, or a slingshot with exploding ammo etc.

If you quit the game without going to bed, you can always restart the day so its no problem to use a mega bomb.

Otherwise you will never know

I wasn't aware of that, I will look into it. Thank you :Speech_Love:

I doubt about the slimes, as I have them locked with fences within the slime hutch and they've never been out, not in the farm nor in the town. The spawn point theory makes sense, I've heard others think it might be the case. I've been experiencing the Wiki being down too, hope they fix it soon. And yes, I've tried the magic quiver as well as the frog, but they don't react to it like the ice rod does. Also, slingshot does not work, as the shots are contained within the border of the farm and does not go outside. So I can't really damage it.

Thank you for the mod link! I will put it to the test later. I was worried about mods corrupting my file somehow, I'm really attached to that save and didn't want to risk it. But with a backup it could work. :Speech_Love:
I don't really know about the megabomb; as I said before, the slingshot with explosive ammo did not do anything. The explosion and damage are contained within the borders of the farm. But I will give it a try anyway. And about the line of sight, it's more of a game limitation, but the screeshots are a workaround as they go a bit further. I guess with the mod I will go even further.

Providing you either simply dont sleep/pass out which causes your save game to overwrite then mods pose no risk to the save but it never hurts to just copy/paste the save file location aswell.
Seftak Nov 23, 2024 @ 12:40pm
Why as nobody confirmed yet if the "bug" is still present on a new save made with the current version.
If it isn't then it is of no concern to anybody since it is just caused by an out of date save and totally normal.
