does it matter where I sell my stuff or is the profit the same?
(e.g. in the box next to my little cottage or at pieres ?)

I strongly recommend selling via the box instead of Pierre's.

Not only can you sell your items quicker if you've got a bunch of crops ready to harvest on your farm instead of having to walk over to Pierre's, but also he only accept certain items such as crops to sell to him whereas you can put almost anything in the box, which is useful if you manage to catch some fish or you have excess materials you don't need anymore (e.g. saps, wood).

In terms of value, however, it doesn't matter as you get the exact same amount of gold either way.

It doesn't matter. Shipping gives you money the next day and selling to the merchant gives you money right now. So if you need money right now because you want a new building but tomorrow is Tuesday and Robin won't be in her store, instead of waiting two days, you can go to the store and sell whatever directly.

Even though she isn't in her store on Mondays either, so regardless, you'll have to wait two days to get her to build something on your farm in this situation.

I believe it’s better to sell at the shipping box because IIRC there achievements for “shipping” items which doesn’t count if you sell to Pierre. I’d only sell to him if you need the money now for your crops

Mostly it's a trade-off of how fast you need the money. Pierre will give you the cash today, whereas with the shipping box, you'll have to wait for the following day.

But as DaTank said, selling to Pierre won't give you "shipping" credit for achievements.

And also, if you sell to Pierre, then other villagers will tell (occasionally) tell you about the wonderful <whatever it was you sold to Pierre> that they bought at the general store, and how they had no idea that Pierre was such a good farmer in addition to being a shopkeeper! (Or something similar).(Depends on the quality of the item and whether it was one of their "liked" items or not too I think, sometimes they'll be less than thrilled about whatever it was).

swords and shoes and rings need to be sold at the adventurers mart

which usually is too much of a hassle so I upgrade my trash can and just get a reduced amount of gold for trashing them.

but yeah early on selling to pierre and willy allow you to get your funds that day which helps cash flow, later on you use the box for credit toward achievements/perfection.

because cash flow only really matters first spring before the strawberry festival.
