Is there any fixed sexuality mod?
Hey! I'm a long time Harvest Moon player and I'm looking to spend some time with Stardew Valley.
Relationships have always been one of the main mechanics of HM and I see that in Stardew Valley it's no different. I've been reading a little about this and I saw that all the characters are essentially bisexual. They can have romances with characters of both sexes. From an immersive point of view I didn't think this was very cool because I think an individual's sexuality is part of their personality. Is there a mod that modifies this aspect, so that each NPC has a different, fixed sexual preference (some are straight, some are gay or bi, etc.)?

The way Stardew Valley handles romance, where all marriageable characters are available to the player regardless of gender, is a design choice for player freedoms. There isn't a popular mod that assigns fixed sexual orientations to NPCs. Some players appreciate the freedom of the game, but there are also players who feel that fixed orientations would add to character immersion and depth. Nothing wrong with those choices, but a mod like you are seeking hasn't been developed yet. I'd hit up the SDV subreddit and see what you can find there.

all romance is very clearly and obviously player initiated. you won't get NPCs hitting on you unasked or anything like that.

Ok, but that don't solve the main "problem": everyone is bi.

there isn't any way to tell the difference, unless you specifically want the NPCs to tell you "no" when you ask for a date.
You don't need such mod. NPCs will have "fixed" personality unless you decide to go whole town and get cold shoulder for ages.

People change and develop, and their sexual preferences are too.

Some bachelors and bachelorettes start with different ones than bisexual, but that change or not depend on player's action.

I was waiting for this argument. lol.

Yeah, no problem,, I guess I'll just have to live with it then. Thanks!

you can have a look around nexus if theres something. but mods that restrict this sort of stuff tend to get banned on there.

on the other hand, if you really really want it, you can probably learn how to do it yourself in an afternoon.

Again, unless you date them, they will remain their old preferences. You can argue it's someone's cat in a box.

It's up to you to change sexual preferences of npcs. Write your head canon or something. Nobody here will stop you.

I want to clarify some misconceptions since your topic is really odd.

Are you planning to get a rejection from some NPCs? Because the specific demand of you confuses me.

Yeah, there's nothing related to this on Nexus, unfortunately.
I thought about doing it myself, but I don't have much free time at the moment (I'm struggling to find time to play anything). I read that mods are created using C#, which is the language I use daily, so it wouldn't be too difficult. I'll take a look later, when time allows.

In my opinion, this is one of the great things about the game. If you want a same-sex relationship, it's there. If you want to completely avoid it, that's an option as well. Simply give the one(s) you want to pursue a bouquet, and the others won't be romantic toward you at all.

I love how CA even set it up that Leah's ex is even the same gender as the player, if you decide to pursue her as a romantic interest. I wish more games handled romantic interactions this way. Same sex is there if players want it, and it's not if they don't.
I think the reason why there doesn't seem to be anything like this in the modding community is the same reason why it was never implemented by the dev - because it's not important. And the reasons why it isn't important is due to the relaxed nature of the game, and also that the characters all have very half baked story arcs. They are all interesting, cute and fun in their own way, but sexual orientations would be odd with what we have. This is not the type of thing that should be implemented just for the sake of it, instead it should be weaved into the characters backstory in a progressive way so that it makes sense.

So even if there were a mod that adds such a system, I think the author/s of that mod would also strongly consider rewriting or building on the existent story arcs - which in turn might change the overall vibe of the game, for better or worse. But at least it would be optional.

I don't think the marriage candidates in this game are necessarily meant to be viewed as bisexual, but if you still have to put a label on them I think player sexual would be more correct since it essentially is about giving the player the freedom of choice when it comes to marrying whoever they want, regardless of their farmers gender. :brownchicken:

Nobody in this game is definitively bisexual. The romantic prospect characters, however, are all farmersexual. It is indeed part of their personality. Look at how even the non-agrarian ones are suddenly seduced into enjoying farm/ranch life, when it's with somebody they're kissing.

That's literally how reality works as well. Every single person you meet in RL can be anything, until they tell you.

And there's no mod about it, because it doesn't matter. Feel free to make a mod that prevents you from gifting half the bachelors the bouquet, though i can assure you, that this will literally change nothing, if you didn't intent to gift them this very specific item to begin with. As a modder i wouldn't waste my time on such a non-problem.

The more interesting question is, if a modder were to craete a "predefined-sexuality" mod, would the NPCs actually have predefined sexualities, or would they just be pansexual people suppressing their true feelings to appear as having predefined sexualities?

What I did was I just imagined the game took place in a different reality.
