Proper dagger usage
I've been experimenting with daggers after getting an iridium needle, and thought it would fit well into my crit build. However, I'm taking huge amounts of contact damage from getting up close to actually use the thing. Any tips on how to use daggers effectively would be very helpful.

I've got a galaxy sword in my offhand to deal with flying enemies.
I know it's pretty much endgame (requires mastery), but the ice rod is insanely good for this.

Then why even use a dagger at all?

Getting used to the dagger's hitbox and paying close attention to your positioning is really important. You've usually got a weaker knockback than other weapons, so you have to hit and reposition if you don't kill them with an attack.

Carrying multiple tools to deal with different situations is a good strategy in my view. Trying to hit multiple enemies coming at me often from diagonals sounded like a terrible time, so I carried something wider to help with that. The ice rod sounds like a good idea, thank you.

Thank you, I could definitely reposition more frequently.

The trouble is that inventory is very limited in this game, even with a maxed out backpack, and caves tend to drop an absurd variety of rare items late game (trinkets, ores, gems, even food at times). I try to stick with one weapon whenever possible, and if I'm doing the skull cavern I won't even bother bringing an axe or hoe.
By the way if enemies are clustering, the napalm ring is a godsend, not only does it do damage but also clears your path of rocks.

Ah, I see. I haven't had too many difficult decisions with my spelunking yet, most of them have been fixed by trashing some sap or whatever (Though admittedly 50+ skull cavern delves are a rarity for me, so possibly a skill issue solution there.)

that is what an iridium trashcan is good for, just sell whatever you wont need to drag home

Yeah but even then there's too much useful stuff I actually want to "drag home". More important than having a redundant weapon.

Yeah if you're not in Dangerous mode (or doing a speedrun) it's a lot less important.

daggers are mostly for things with annoying knockback like ghosts and such which will fly out of bounds, you flip to the dagger and ult them to prevent spending too much time hunting them down, usually swords are just better, so I just carry a crusader sword and not stress.

The ice rod put a stop to that quickly

Or you can just ignore them and focus on ladders and ore. Only hitting them when they get close rather than chasing them down

What's an ult?

I'd assume it's the special attack of the weapon.
