Am I the only one?
Am I the only Stardew player that doesn't really like farming or having animals? I always just explore, do foraging and fishing, and spend time in the mines to get my money. I almost wish I lived in Pelican Town instead of on a farm lol

One that comes to mind was this one:

I was recovering at that time and needed something cozy to immerse myself in, and this turned out to be one of my longest playthroughs. As you can see, not much room, but there is one obelisk (I picked the Island one) and also the Golden Clock although you might not recognize it because of the modded textures. So it definitely depends on your playstyle, and what purpose you have with your current playthrough. The game is still very fun, relaxing and enjoyable without reaching true perfection ^.^

I would be interested in starting a fish farm too, when I unlock it. I guess I just like the unconventional ways of making money in Stardew. My farm name is Maple Creek Farm too so I plan on having tons of maple trees for producing syrup

Yeah and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! It's actually very interesting I think to experiment and find different routes towards becoming a succesful farmer. There are quite a few challenges out there as well touching this very subject.

yea same, feels like i'm too focused on progressing fast instead of just enjoying these parts of the game

Nah I'm sure there's a bunch that prefer not to farm. If I'm to farm I prefer having Junimo's huts to help out.
At first I din't enjoy fishing at all, but it's become one of my favorite things to do.

Is it viable in Stardew? I'm inclined to farm, or something here.

Your playstyle is perfectly viable in a game like "My Time at Portia", where you're a builder, rather than a farmer.

Depends on the scale of what you're doing (and obviously what i say is only from the point of making money, which doesn't need to be important to everyone, given that a game can also be played through without being efficient)

In the beginning, fishing is definitely the most effective way to make money (not taking exploits into account), since they've a high base value, but they're scaling very bad into the late game due to there not being any way to speed up the process of fishing that much.

For foraging you're literally capped at the stuff that randomly spawns each day, which makes it a horrible choice for money making, however the energy restoration is very good for the early game for pretty much any playstyle, especially when you just want to work more.

Mines are pretty much the opposite of fishing, they're quite low on income most of the game, mostly due to how much time and energy it costs to break down stones, but farming for iridium deep in the mines can definitely make some money in the lategame. And crystalariums have quite a high setup price (both in ressources and time), but once they're set up, they're pretty much money printing machines by either providing you with diamonds or with Jade to get stairs and thus more iridium.

Animals have a high initial investment and steady workload that needs to be done every day, especially petting them is very important to get them to high friendship levels. They also need quite some space, especially if you let them out, which can make them less profitable, depending on your playstyle (though unless you're using pigs, having them stay inside is also an option to maximize profit, it just takes a littlebit longer to build up friendship).

And definitely the most efficient way to make money is crops. They just scale as much as you alot space to them, so we're speaking about millions per week if you want to, which is pretty much impossible for any of the other except for pigs (albeit crops being way less labour intensive)

And a honorable mention as being one of the worst ways to make money is the fish pont. It can for sure make some passive money, but the amount of space you need to dedicate to it is just ridiculous. I usually have 1 or 2 of them just for fun, but it's definitely not worth taking them if you don't like using them to begin with^^

well, i hate raising animals, if that counts. i always prefer getting animal products by other means, if possible. xP
and i'm sure there are players out there who hate farming or begun to hate it over time (not me (yet) though).
One thing that bugs me is that, once you've done most of the "objective" based progress, like getting/shipping certain items and max friendship, bundles, etc, there's not much else besides farming. Everything I need on my second save file is only restricted by money, and nothing comes close to just plain selling ancient fruit wine. Going in mines/caves is basically pointless, dialogue is mostly repeats, special events give basically no rewards. Energy is effectively infinite too, so there's no reason to cook different dishes or use the bathhouse.

Well it's probably not viable to most player's standards. Like my first year I made 420,000 gold (Mainly all from mining, foraging, and fishing. I have barely any crops & no animals.)

420,000 is good enough for me, but I know other people farm a ton and make millions every in game year.. But idk, I just find maintaing the crops and animals to be too stressful

after you open the sewer can just buy a iridium sprinkler every friday if you want to build up farming the slow way

I enjoy collecting farm produce, but other than that I let auto-grabbers handle animals (I like to pet them here and there, but milking etc. is a drag). Mostly I'm in the mines or placing produce in jars/kegs/dehydrators. I like printing money through as many routes as possible, but devote very little to farming (literally 2-3days/month+greenhouse every 3 days).
(Having a mushroom farm, greenhouse, slime hut, hardwood forest and fishing ponds takes like 5 ingame hours to maintain each day and I don't have keg storages yet.)

I haven't done a pure fishing early game, so I can't comment on how good that is, but mining with the double gem perk is pretty profitable. Fish enough to buy steel pickaxe->go below lvl50 in mines->get 1-4diamonds per day (so 1500 on average)+bug materials, coal, ore, coffee beans, etc.
If you're lucky, you'll get an ancient seed before summer.

I do find it a bit odd buying a farming life sim if you don't like farming at all. On the other hand, there are plenty of other things to do, and different ways of building up your farm. On one run, I essentially had a fish farm. It sure made the progress slower, but since I also don't mind taking my sweet time with things, that wasn't really an issue. Still, there is a difference between choosing a different route and not liking something all together.

You are probably not alone in this though :brownchicken:

Then you should absolutely find a friend or two and get started on Multiplayer! Divide the tasks and everybody do what they do best and like the most.

I only farm lightly for the bundles. Once I have sprinklers unlocked I farm heavier. I like farming.... I hate watering. Maybe if watering gave a bit of xp I would care less but it is such a time sink.

You only progress a small part of your skills this way though.
There are parts and items you can only use by engaging in the other systems as well.
Besides, the big money is definitely not in mining or combat.
Nakos Dec 30, 2024 @ 12:23pm
Well, it is first and foremost a farming game.

Seems like there might be some other gaming options that might fit the OP's needs a little better. Some of the PvE focused Survival games perhaps?

The Long Dark and Core Keeper come to mind.
ChrillBill Dec 30, 2024 @ 12:39pm
The great thing about this game though Nakos is that you can play it in many and very different ways, while still really enjoying yourself. I think maybe some of us misunderstood the OP in the sense that they might have bought the game thinking it would be fun to farm, but later discovered that it wasn't as fun as they had hoped :happy_yeti:

As long as they have fun, that's really what matters! :staxelCow:
