Must Have Mods?
Starting to mod the game. What should I get?

The big thing I have to mention, if you're going to play with SVE, is to use a time tweaker mod, to extend the length of days to your liking. Otherwise, the extensive map and locations will be stressful, trying to get around and do everything in the vanilla allotted time.
This was helpful, TY!

Well, I can only give you recommendations based on my own taste :P

My first and foremost favourite:
*DaisyNiko's Earthy Recolor[www.nexusmods.com]
Beautiful recolor mod that changes the look of the game, giving it a more toned down and therefore also easier on the eyes look. Looks even better with this:
*DaisyNiko's Earthy Interiors[www.nexusmods.com]

DaisyNiko also has a lot of fantastic farm maps, many of which I have used myself and can therefore recommend if that is also something you would be interested in.

I am also addicted to these mods due to their medieval theme:
*Medieval Buildings[www.nexusmods.com]
*Medieval Craftables[www.nexusmods.com]
*Gwen's Paths[www.nexusmods.com]
*Cottagecore Fences[www.nexusmods.com]
*Way Back Pelican Town[www.nexusmods.com]
These are all made by the same artist called Gweniaczek and they can give both the farm and also the rest of the town a very earthy and medieval look.

The following is a great mod when you want to add and change a lot of textures in the game. With this you can for example have different coops and barns on the farm at the same time and there are also many packs for craftables, furniture and animals:
*Alternative Textures[www.nexusmods.com]
^ There are so many different texture packs to pick from, so best advice I can give is to browse nexus to see if there is one or several that interests you.

This is similar to the one above but focus on the farmer you have created:
*Fashion Sense[www.nexusmods.com]

This is also a nice mod to help getting the valley to feel more alive:
*Visible Fish[www.nexusmods.com]
Makes the waters look really cool by displaying fish swimming around in it. A nice effect that makes the game feel even more alive.

*Dynamic Reflections[www.nexusmods.com]
Also a must have for me. Makes it so that you can see your reflection in mirrors, waters and as an extra cool effect you can also see stars and comets reflecting in the waters during night time. This mod also generates reflecting puddles during and after rainy weather for more realism which is a really nice touch.

Two of my favourite animal mods:
*Otters Coop Animals[www.nexusmods.com]
*Otters Barn Animals[www.nexusmods.com]

And speaking of animals, this is also a good mod:
*Horse Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
Makes the horse so much better than the vanilla version. You can for example give it treats and water. You can also pet and build a relationship with it. And with this mod your horse will also be able to carry stuff for you in their saddle bag! It's a really good improvement and I suggest reading carefully through the description.

Additional favourites by the talented Aimon111:
*Aimon's Tidy Cozy Cellar[www.nexusmods.com]
*Aimon's Fancy Shed[www.nexusmods.com]
*Aimon's Fancy Greenhouse[www.nexusmods.com]
*More Lively Farm Cave[www.nexusmods.com]
*More Lively Sewer Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
*Distant Lands - A Small Witch Swamp Expansion[www.nexusmods.com]

And lastly, but not leastly, my favourite big expansion mod:
*Stardew Valley Expanded[www.nexusmods.com]
Hope you'll find something you like! :love_seagull:

Thank you. I saw the swamp mod in a playthrough and thought that was cool but could not find it. The list was helpful!

cheating? In a single-player non-competitive game? Unless he starts posting entries on speedrunning sites, who cares?
Yeah that's such a smooth brain take. What is the purpose of a game? For the player to have fun. If getting the maximum fun out of it requires altering the game then you're just helping it fulfil its purpose, "cheating" or not. I'm sure most devs prefer someone modding their game and then liking it instead of just dropping it because the vanilla version frustrates them.

Obviously it's a different story when it's competitive and your modifications give you an unfair advantage over your opponents.
To clarify, I spent a bit over 50 hours on my first vanilla playthrough. I got bored after that as much of the content felt a bit repetitive. I prefer games I can mod as I can now tailor the game to how I prefer.

Cheating boredom I guess...
-animals and pet: elle's cuter
-events: date night redux, miihau mods, community wednesday, event expansion, life cycle rival heart, immersive family-a children's event
-dialogue: canon-friendly dialogue expansion, misscoriel's npc unique, true love valley, unique gift dialogues expanded, heart event helper
-character: unique children, seasonal outfits slighty cuter, immersive spouses for 1.6
-potrait: they deserve it too-potrait for vendors
forgot to mention this one:
https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/23895

line sprinklers, makes even the first sprinkler very useful and farming fields in general more pleasing to the eye
There is one more mod, in addition to those that I posted above, that I would rate as a "must have."

It is Crop Harvest Bubbles
https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/20781

God. My thanks to the person(s) who designed this one! It pops up notices above crops ready to be harvested. No more wandering around for (virtual) hours searching for the handful of hidden ripe crops that the Farm Computer insists are out there!

I started my playthrough but added some of what you have listed so thanks for that. I wish I was not so far into the game as the last 2 for the bundles seems like a fun challenge.

In my experience, it is best to play through the game at least once without mods. Even so, it is hard to pass on the one that adds an elevator to the Skull Cavern. If there is such a thing as a "must have" mod, it would be that one.
this ruins the fun of the game

ah yes, the immense fun of contending with the hardest dungeon in a game with ass combat in order to get a resource most of the actually fun stuff is locked behind.
