Not because its bad or otherwise, but the game is already big enough and fun, while STE kinda "blows" the game out of proportion and it makes it more like a job in certain ways. I personally also do not like certain elements of the mod, yet I can see, why people want more of the "Stardew"-feeling all in all. At least for a first try, I would vote against it, but you may read about it on nexus or look up a few vids on youtube, whats the mod all about. If you although like more places, you could also check out "Ridgeside Village" or "East Scarp".

I'm currently playing with Stardew Valley Expanded, and I'm inclined to agree.

I think SVE is good for a playthrough to see what it is, and encounter those new stories and characters. It works as its own sort of expansion based off vanilla rules.

I don't think it's something I'd play a second time, since it makes the game rather bloated.

I agree with you, it just got too big with the latest update and also it somehow manages to overflow you with content from the first day yet takes forever to reach endgame content or perfection.
I've got a whole list going on with things/characters/storyline I don't like even with mature content turned off and yet most of the new areas make me want to keep it.

If anyone can recommend a good forest area mod with lots of foraging opportunities or something for the desert I'd be eternally grateful

I heard it changes combat and makes it better (from the sample gifs in the mod's description). also, would you recommend it for someone who is trying to get the joja achievement on steam? i heard that route is more interesting in SVE and i didn't get the steam achievement when i played with just small/simple mods.

it makes combat far more challenging with adding 3 new combat areas that are overrun with monsters even in the light version and some boss fights, you'll most likely even have to set a lower spawn rate with farm type manager because it's causing lag if you're not using a high-end computer, personally I'm not a fan of combat which makes the changes to the adventure guild more of a negative aspect to me

I actually finished the Jouja route in SVE and can tell you it's much more fleshed out, even though I could have done without the environment talk because apparently Jouja is destroying everything and dumping their trash in every river and ocean, paving proper roads with street lights and forcing Pierre into almost bankruptcy
if you are too sensible about this topic, you might not want to go that route because the NPC wont stop talking about it after you're done with the new megacorp building

Well, I can only give you recommendations based on my own taste :P

My first and foremost favourite:
*DaisyNiko's Earthy Recolor[www.nexusmods.com]
Beautiful recolor mod that changes the look of the game, giving it a more toned down and therefore also easier on the eyes look. Looks even better with this:
*DaisyNiko's Earthy Interiors[www.nexusmods.com]

DaisyNiko also has a lot of fantastic farm maps, many of which I have used myself and can therefore recommend if that is also something you would be interested in.

I am also addicted to these mods due to their medieval theme:
*Medieval Buildings[www.nexusmods.com]
*Medieval Craftables[www.nexusmods.com]
*Gwen's Paths[www.nexusmods.com]
*Cottagecore Fences[www.nexusmods.com]
*Way Back Pelican Town[www.nexusmods.com]
These are all made by the same artist called Gweniaczek and they can give both the farm and also the rest of the town a very earthy and medieval look.

The following is a great mod when you want to add and change a lot of textures in the game. With this you can for example have different coops and barns on the farm at the same time and there are also many packs for craftables, furniture and animals:
*Alternative Textures[www.nexusmods.com]
^ There are so many different texture packs to pick from, so best advice I can give is to browse nexus to see if there is one or several that interests you.

This is similar to the one above but focus on the farmer you have created:
*Fashion Sense[www.nexusmods.com]

This is also a nice mod to help getting the valley to feel more alive:
*Visible Fish[www.nexusmods.com]
Makes the waters look really cool by displaying fish swimming around in it. A nice effect that makes the game feel even more alive.

*Dynamic Reflections[www.nexusmods.com]
Also a must have for me. Makes it so that you can see your reflection in mirrors, waters and as an extra cool effect you can also see stars and comets reflecting in the waters during night time. This mod also generates reflecting puddles during and after rainy weather for more realism which is a really nice touch.

Two of my favourite animal mods:
*Otters Coop Animals[www.nexusmods.com]
*Otters Barn Animals[www.nexusmods.com]

And speaking of animals, this is also a good mod:
*Horse Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
Makes the horse so much better than the vanilla version. You can for example give it treats and water. You can also pet and build a relationship with it. And with this mod your horse will also be able to carry stuff for you in their saddle bag! It's a really good improvement and I suggest reading carefully through the description.

Additional favourites by the talented Aimon111:
*Aimon's Tidy Cozy Cellar[www.nexusmods.com]
*Aimon's Fancy Shed[www.nexusmods.com]
*Aimon's Fancy Greenhouse[www.nexusmods.com]
*More Lively Farm Cave[www.nexusmods.com]
*More Lively Sewer Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
*Distant Lands - A Small Witch Swamp Expansion[www.nexusmods.com]

And lastly, but not leastly, my favourite big expansion mod:
*Stardew Valley Expanded[www.nexusmods.com]
Hope you'll find something you like! :love_seagull:

I was just talking about this with some of my discord/ irl friends:

SVE is, from what I've seen of the first couple months, *friendlier* to the Joja route, and makes the community center route harder. There's a handful of characters that are even Joja favored, and you can befriend the manager and cashiers in the mod.

So, yes. SVE would be better for a Joja route.
I'm undecided if Vanilla or SVE is better overall, on a community center route.

The big thing I have to mention, if you're going to play with SVE, is to use a time tweaker mod, to extend the length of days to your liking. Otherwise, the extensive map and locations will be stressful, trying to get around and do everything in the vanilla allotted time.

my sensitivity to this depends mostly on if the author followed the "show, don't tell" rule when guilting the player. also, resource intensive features are something the devs themselves should warn the player about. thanks fot letting me know!

thanks for the warning! and for the info on the route difficulties in your previous post.

cheating? In a single-player non-competitive game? Unless he starts posting entries on speedrunning sites, who cares?

Yeah that's such a smooth brain take. What is the purpose of a game? For the player to have fun. If getting the maximum fun out of it requires altering the game then you're just helping it fulfil its purpose, "cheating" or not. I'm sure most devs prefer someone modding their game and then liking it instead of just dropping it because the vanilla version frustrates them.

Obviously it's a different story when it's competitive and your modifications give you an unfair advantage over your opponents.

I recommend DaisyNiko's Earthy Recolour
https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/5255

It only replaces textures in the game to make everything a little softer on the eyes. I would get headaches during winter without this mod, so it's a must-have for me. I also prefer how the game looks with it.
EDIT: Oh apparently this had been mentioned previously, oh well.

*Yet Another Fishing Mod

Here's a plus: All of these have been updated this year, have been installed in conjunction with the latest SV game version, and none appear to conflict with each other. (Except for alphanumeric keyboard shortcuts from other mods activating when typing words in a couple of the mods, but that can be worked around.)

The only one that I can't personally vouch for is Tractor Mod. I have not earned the privilege yet! But, that seems to be a very popular mod and is quite reliable.

Correction: Combat Controls has not been updated since 2021. However, it still appears to work. This is the mod that you want if you are using a mouse and you wish your character to face in the direction of where you are clicking before performing an action. The designer intended it for combat, and it certainly works for that, but I found that it's great for hoeing and fishing, too! (There is a newer version for this, tagged "Redux," but that author includes some other features that I consider to be unnecessary complications.)

Ty
Stuff like this helps!
