Pet (dog vs cat) - why not make them useful?!
Right now those animals are just cosmetic for the most part. That's just sad...
As is, you can find comments like "didnt feed mine in 6years" or so... shesh. That's harsh...

Why not give them SOMETHING to do??

If you keep them happy:
- dog prevents chicken be stolen (by stray cats/foxes) / which makes them happy
- cat does 'get' you chickens from 'somewhere'/ or protects barn animals from rats which makes those happy. Barncats get along with all sorts of animals!

Just an idea.

Alternative
- Dog may digs up items. (yes yes i heard it does that! just reiterating^^)
- Cat may brings (rare?) fish for the collection.

Dog: plays fetch with you using a ball. **
Cat: you can use a tiny wind up mouse it chases.

Additionaly:
- the cat may help finding secrets if you follow it around (birdnests with trinkets or eggs?)
- the dog may helps fight in the mines

It certainly would add a lot to the animals and make them <beloved< or at least cared for and add just a tiny bit of depth to the world ♥

**[Funfact: the dog ball fetch feature is the most important mechanic in BaldursGate3!]

They already have at least some mechanical function. At high friendship levels, they will bring you items when pet.

Honestly sound like very unfun mechanics. I dislike dogs and don't want to keep one on my farm and when my prefered playstyle has the consequence of randomly losing chickens, then i rather skip chickens completely instead of dealing with a dog.

Same for cats, i don't see what rats offer to the game other than being annoying and potentially wasting time for those who don't take a cat early on.

Though something you can do with them would definitely nice, but it would be better to have something that's not just cosmetical, like being able to train them, for example for a pet festival.

It would be cool if you could take your dog on walks around town

Like the first reply already told you, they give items at max friendship. Cats give lots of fish, dogs bring materials and the rarest I've had was an artefact trove. There's also another pet type you can buy from Marnie later, one of them costs 500k so I'd be surprised if it didn't have some good items on its table when max. :2016bee:

The turtle pets are modified cats. They bring an alternate list of fish items at max friendship.

this sounds o adorable,im currrently hoarding like 12 cats on my farm since the new update and i make sure my babies are watered every day. so sweet when they bring me things<3:tabbycat:
Honestly I feel like both pets and spouses/kids are a ton of work considering how little benefits they give (compared to something like the statue of the dwarf king)
