Yes, they're always using the same paths. There are picture about where you can put machines if you really want to utilize the machines. Though Mods that add content obviously might change some things around.
Tillable tiles are the most valuable kind of tiles you have in the game, so many people simply don't want to waste it for things that produce something like once a week. Especially maps like the river or hilltop, which have very low amounts of tiles benefit from getting stuff off your map.
In my case it was a bunch of furnaces and charcoal kilns I wanted to keep running while I chopped a lot of trees. I wouldn't have planned to leave them there, I just wanted them near where I was working.

Huh, interesting! I simply never thought about doing it that way. I typically just throw my machines in one spot on my farm and then never move them again. I never thought about putting them where I am working, then picking them up and taking them with me when I was done.
