What's with Leo?

I always notice his heart is at 0 even though I gave him a gift that he loves the day before. Is there something that needs to be done to retain the hearts? Has it always been like this?

Yes, if you haven't reach max friendship with someone you will gradually lose friendship with that person each day(-2 points). A full heart is 250 points, a loved gift is 80 points, this will multiply by 8 on their birthday.
If you want to reach max friendship fast, on their birthday give them a Stardrop Tea and a love gift, the tea doesn't count toward the 2-gift per weak restriction.

Just one loved gift isn't usually enough to gain a whole heart with someone. Normally it takes a few gifts before a heart shows up.

hearts are 250, a loved gift is 120.

if you want to juice someone fast, use stardrop tea, particularly on their birthday.

I usually come back to the island every 2 days and have been giving him bananas twice every week for the past 2 weeks. I remember seeing 1 heart the last time I gave him one thats why I find it weird to see it back down to 0. Does it really go down that fast?

Yup, im actually considering giving Leo all the stardrop tea i got from the community tasks just to max out friendship with him

Banana is a universally like item, so it gives +45 per item, so if you've given them 4, then it's 180 friendship point. Now if you've not talked to them for 10 days, then it decayed down to 160 friendship.

Overall rather try loved gifts. Duck Feather is probably the easiest to come by, especially since it can also be of higher quality for more friendship points. Mango is also easy to get, but it will most likely be normal Mangos, so it takes more time overall

You are right. I've been giving him the wrong island fruit this whole time. I should give him mango instead.
