You can try to run from everything, you're faster than most of the mobs, especially when you get the running upgrade books.
After killing 80 cave insects, if you go to the adventure guild, you'll get a pretty good sword as a reward. The insect head. Its worth it.
Bombs make things so much easier when mining, but they can be expensive in early game
Install some mods. There's a mod that lets you speed up animations, including your attack animation. At first I thought it was close to cheating but with how many hits some later enemies take, i don't care. There's no reason for some enemies to take 15+ hits to kill. Other than to waste time but its my opinion that half the game design is built around wasting time.
as a fellow combat hater, i tend to disable the 1-hit kill mod whenever this game or the mods i install add some new combat feature... only to enable it right back when the strongest vanilla weapon takes 2 or more hits to kill some monsters. killing monsters without mods when you don't need to farm their loot feels like a waste of time, like somebody said above, specially low knockback resistance fliers x_X
if you can't get a weapon at least 3 levels above whatever your current weapon is soon, that's what i'd do in your place, to be honset. i love this game, but i don't feel like combat was a feature intended for it. i tend to spend winter digging for snow yam and winter roots in the train station and the beach instead of spelunking, but i'm the kind of person who can have fun doing that, for other people it could get old real fast.

I normally get a bone sword off the mobs on floor 70-80 and use that until the floor 90? chest with the obsidian edge
maces? I mean they can work but its awkward and you gotta double your swing with an ult for decent damage. usually i just use a sword.
I think I got some sort of crusader sword somewhere on my first run and used it, killing skellies was easier with it as it was a holy blade.
you could also buy a claymore.
Clubs deal a lot of damage, sure, but they're far too slow to be used effectively in most situations, and although daggers are very quick, their attack range is way too short in a game where monsters deal damage on contact.
Swords deal a reasonable amount of damage while also having a good attack range. It's entirely possible to land hits on monsters even when they're not directly in front of you and they also have a decent attack speed making them my ideal weapon choice.
Also new to 1.6 are trinkets, which may also help you out in combat situations. The Ice Rod, for example, can target enemies from a distance, and fairies can heal you during combat. You'll be able to gain access to these once you reach level 10 in all skills and enter the cave that can be found south of Marnie's Ranch. Unlock combat mastery and you'll be able to find trinkets from random enemy drops.
But enemies do become bullet sponges. A major dungeon in the game has these slimes that take like 10hits to kill with a lvl8 sword, but alternatively you can completely ignore those mobs later on.
Just to chime in as someone whose main farm is wilderness with 90% combat /10% everything else, I think while the combat is clunky, it definitely isn't bad.
Ask yourself "What is the combat lacking, how would I enjoy it more"
If your answer to that is "make enemies less spongy", then you just do not enjoy the combat. That's alright.
If you want to quickly kill ground enemies, get them against a wall, and kill flying enemies with daggers. Spam healing consumables if you are facing many enemies.
It may seem expensive, but I find this to be a far better way to obtain iridium sprinklers in the early-mid game compared to crafting them yourself.
krobus on fridays sells 1 iridium sprinkler every friday.... he's the NPC in the sewers... which you get the key to sewers after donating 60 items to the museum... its 10,000 gold for 1 sprinkler.... but thats how I manage to usually get my sprinklers early on....
also I tend to favor the sword early on and mid game wise at least.... with the sword you can actually block attacks with the secondary feature.... cant remember if it effects ranged attacks.... but basically you can be swinging and blocking pretty well with it...
early game wise I tend to fish a lot... I like to fish in the mountains... chubs I tend to keep the higher quality ones... iridium chubs when eaten give +65 energy and +29 health.... when salmonberry or blackberry season hits i'll gather those as well... which are about the same level as iridium chubs... but with foraging skills gatherer and botanist you can get a chance to harvest double the amount and they'll always be highest quality...
after having enough money... i'll start buying salads from gus in the saloon... 220 gold each... but provide +113 energy and +50 health...
buff food also helps.... one I like to use is pumpkin soup... get robins relationship up to 7 hearts and she gives you the recipe... it costs 1 pumpkin and 1 milk to make... it provides +100 energy and +90 health.... but the main thing is it gives +2 defense and +2 luck bonuses... making you tankier and more lucky for item drops... it lasts for over 7 min...
also saloon has triple shot espresso recipe... a 4 min speed boost.... it cost 5,000 gold for the recipe and takes 3 coffees to make... which you could buy from gus for 300 each.... or if you have the beans they grow pretty great... it takes 10 days for coffee bean to grow and they can be harvested every 2 days... and you can just take the multiple beans you harvest from them to plant even more.... but 5 beans per coffee.... and 3 coffee for espresso.... thats 15 beans per espresso needed... which at how fast they grow your able to stock up quite a bit...
60 items is not the early game. more likely to get some from tickets in lewis machine.
I would love to do some fishing but I can't figure out the mini game and have yet to catch a single fish. I am using an xbox controller and I have yet to figure out what to push when to catch anything.
fishing is very simple.... basically in the minigame the fish icon will move around... which its movement is different with the different types of fish.... and you wanna have them within the green bar in order to catch it.... it takes some time to reel em in so you gotta keep the bar on them to progress the catch... and the less mistakes you make the higher quality of fish you can catch....
but the size of the green bar is very very low early on... as you grow in fishing level your green bar will increase in size... there are also cork bobbers that you can apply to higher level rods that will further increase its size...
so if your having trouble early on... use the training rod first to grab some levels in fishing.... the training rod makes you always catch low quality stuff... but... it makes it so your fishing bar is essentially like level 5 worth in size making it easier to catch things....
but fishing can be very profitable... the 5th level skill fisher perk makes fish worth 25% more.... and the 10th level angler perk makes fish worth 50% more.... on top of that... you could get a fish smoker recipe from willy and make smoked fish... which counts as an artisan good too and can be increased in sell value with the level 10 farming artisan good perk giving it another 40% increase in value...
im pretty sure there was a fishing tutorial in game.... but in case you didnt catch it... to make the green bar move you have to use the mouse left click... you can click and hold to make it go up... and release to make it go down.... you'll figure it out pretty quickly... sometimes you need to do long holds or sometimes just tap it to keep it steady in one spot.... be careful of going to hard in either direction because the green bar will bounce if you move it too fast...
In the desert there is a stronger sword if you happen to find a prismatic shard.
Stardew combat is somewhat okay I guess. It's kinda weird most of the time since it's kinda scale with the strongest weapon you are owning.
