Steam Deck Controls in StarDew Valley Not Working

I'm at my wit's end with this steam deck and Stardew Valley. I know the problem is me but it's not making me want to smash this deck into ten thousand pieces any less.

It all started when I wanted to use my Steam Deck as a console by putting it in a dock, connecting it to a TV, and using a PS4 controller. I immediately tried to play Stardew Valley using this setup but found that that the PS4 controller would not work. After swapping profile after profile, I ended up disabling steam input. This allowed my PS4 controller to work properly.

Days later, I wanted to play Stardew Valley on the deck using the deck as a handheld, the standard way of playing games on the Steam Deck. The controls for StarDew Valley do not work using it this way. I again tried swapping all kinds of profiles, recommended profiles, community profiles, etc. None of them work. I enable Steam Input again. This didn't help.

I've seen reference of reordering controllers but I don't see any way of doing this in this version of the Steam Deck OS. I can't see how it can be this hard to play this game on the Steam Deck. Can anyone explain to me what is going on?

Never had this problem but I've only used Xbox and Switch controllers. Never changed profiles or anything, Stardew works fine for me handheld.
