You have to pet the dog and fill it's water bowl every day to get a perfect score from Grandpa at the end of year two.
That is exaggerated but the general point is accurate.
Still annoying. And the dog is 1000 times more likely to be in your way than any NPC that isn't your family. But actually, yes, they CAN block more than NPC. At least when they are sleeping; sometimes when you push on them, they will back up a half-step then lay down again. I've gone through an entire row of stuff pushing the dog in tiny steps all the way down. Sort of irritating when it's 1:40 AM and you are trying to get to bed.
In HM: BtN your dog could actually do stuff: have pups, play at the beach, win contests and also bark at wolves that could come to your farm and scare your animals.
