Crab pots pointless?
Not really catching much. Mainly just trash or snails

Some trash can be recycled for refined quartz, wood and stone.
Some of the "fish" are required for recipes.

I think crab pots main function is for crafting Quality Fertilizer and yeah trash is commonly get catch, but well passive resources for crafting. And I always sell torch & put it on farm or other place for light in early game.

The fishing profession which makes it so that crab pots never produce junk (Mariner) can be worth taking if one doesn't fish much with the rod but makes a lot of use of crab pots. This can be especially useful if one uses a ton quality fertilizer.

Otherwise, it's all about quantity. It might be worth lining shores and docks with them if one needs a lot of the items they produce, but without the profession that eliminates the need to bait them (Lure Master), it can be very tedious to not only harvest all of them but reset them with bait.

I don't really bother with them myself though, and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, so don't feel like you need to use them if you don't want to. I only have 2 in the river and 2 in the ocean (they catch different things in freshwater and saltwater) that I occasionally harvest when I happen to pass them and have extra bait on my rod.

They're more late game, but still pretty meh.

Fishing with a rod is for treasure, artifact hunting, and early game money. After year 1 ends, you'll be making so much money with Farming that Fishing is largely pointless.

If there was a way to automate crab pots, they'd be great, but personally I can't stand harvesting 50 per day.

Off the top of my head, though?
- You need 1 fish to make quality fertilizer. So you can turn a bunch of cockles or oysters into fertilizer to make your crops beefier, without having to process them; you'll just have more gold/silver star crops.
- Lobsters, crabs and... something else sell for "okay" money. I'd sell those, or make dishes with them.
- Driftwood can be converted to ~10 wood each via a wood chipper. Glasses and CDs convert to refined quartz, which is moderately helpful early game, but late game is only useful if you want plant pots or solar panels. The newspaper can be made into silk to tailor clothes or build a mill, otherwise the torches can be placed around town behind buildings and bushes to light the place up.

Crab pots could use an update and some love. They're "okay", but not great. Fishing gets left behind in year 1 too, but it at least pays for a lot of stuff before it becomes useless.

I use like 3 of them on my farm so I can have snails and stuff for cooking but that's pretty much it. Unless you need the materials that you can get from recycling trash, I wouldn't worry about making them. I also have a worm bin next to them so it doesn't cost me anything to use them.

There is a mod called automate on the nexus that will do that: you place bait in a chest adjacent to the crab pots and it will feed them everyday. If you place recyclers adjacent they will automatically recycle the trash and place it in the chest with the fish.

The mod also work with all the other crafting object like furnace cheese maker etc. It makes the game a lot easier.

If you love crab cakes, which are awesome, they are a reasonable source of crabs. Beach Farm ftw. Fish Ponds are too valuable for other things. They also help with one quest in the early mid-game, if you want to complete it the lazy way. Garbage can yield coal, iron ore, & cloth too.

Put 10 or so in ocean for lobster (loved by Elliot) and crabs to make crab cakes (one of the best foods imo). Put another 10 in the river by the bridge to the beach for periwinkle/crawfish to use for Quality Fert. Build 5 or so recyclers to handle the constant influx of trash items. Having your pots in that area makes daily catch removal/bait adding less of a chore.

They're a useful way to passively gain some fishing skill if you're someone who doesn't like the fishing rod mechanics. And they give you access to some "fish specific" recipes.

I have a soft spot for crab pots personally. Like others have said good way to generate passive fishing skill and materials. I leave 3 in the river right by the town exit to the beach and 5 in the ocean right by Willy's house. I would collect the fish, sell to Willy and buy the bait I needed until I unlocked worm bins.
And if you want to catch every fish for that elusive master angler trophy, your going to need crab pots.

On regular farm I usually just fill up that tiny watering pond with them. You get 24-28 in there I forget off the top of my head.

As others have said early game it's good for acquiring quartz and some other goodies from recycling the trash. I just stock up on the snails and crayfish you get to use for quality fertilizer. Sashimi is a good option to use the non-trash you get as well since it's just a single ingredient needed, and most of the town likes it.

Where are you putting them? If you're just putting them on your farm pond, then there's your problem :)
