Doing this will ensure they will not be mad at you, if they are currently mad at you then doing the above for a couple days should correct their mood.
I do pet my chickens, and I have fresh grass growing in a fenced-in area I made for them. So I didn't know why the one chicken was thin, when they both have access to fresh grass. But now I know about the hay thing for when I add more animals. If I do! I've already got so much going on....
eventually Marnie sells an autograbber, and if you can get an auto petter from either skull cavern random chests or ...other means. you can ignore them for a long time.
I ignored my chickens for months and only visit them when gus wants an omelette pop in, loot the auto grabber, pop over to gus's and drop off 12 eggs.
But then I did just get enough resources for my first house upgrade, right as the end of summer approaches. I'm not sure whether that's really late, really early, or pretty much where most people do it. I prioritized upgrading all my tools to copper first, though....
I get my silo, then my coop then my barn so I can get a greenhouse first. so after a while I get to the house, probably fall. might add some additional silos to help me get thru winter.
the house upgrades are nice and I get to them eventually, but I start on the animals first and the barn and coop take a decent amount of time and trips to Robins.
