Floor dividers...?
What exactly are they? Like, I get that they're supposed to be decorations, but I can't tell what they even are? I originally thought you could use them to section off parts of a room, and then place down different flooring types, so for example you could have half of your kitchen be tile and the other half wood. That's not the case.

And they aren't really big enough to act like steps, like how some houses have dens/living rooms you step down into... and furthermore, they only divide left/right, not up/down, so you're even more restricted. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding their purpose? Anyone found a good way to decorate with them?

I placed those as border panel between kitchen and "living room" flooring.

You kinda already answered your own question, They are meant to be a decoration in your house to divide floors in case you want to say make your kitchen and living room floors different.

You have to use multiple dividers and place them above each other from wall to wall. It's really just for people who want to customize their house the way they want.

I did that though... I stacked up 4 of them on top of each other in the northwest room, then stacked up 4 more in a 2nd column next to them, and the flooring still covered the entire room rather than the sectioned off part... That's why I'm confused as to how they work, or if they're just a decoration. Basically, do they serve a function in terms of decorating? Or do they just get placed down and do nothing at all?

Well there is some confusing information here. You could have a different floor for basically every room even before these dividers were introduced. They are meant as decor only. You cannot use these to have different floors in one room. One room - one floor.

I saw in a design lay out that someone had split the flooring of one room though. Is it possible to do with commands?

Maybe they were using path tiles instead of flooring?
