There is a mod that actually helps you keep track of mods that need to be updated.
I have updated SMAPI, but i still have several mods that can be updated, but the game is running fine as they are. CAN BE UPDATED is not the same as MUST be updated.
Also if you log into nexus, pull up your history, it will tell you which mods can be updated.
The dev said this a couple weeks ago:

And about a year ago, he said this during an interview with Game Informer:
He'll probably do more SDV stuff "at some point".

He doesn't WANT to. He's an indie developer for a reason. He likes to work, quietly, at his own pace, on his own projects and to retain complete control over them.
He has, occasionally, brought in help on various aspect of the game.
But the point is: He wants to make games. He doesn't want to be a manager or a producer, which would push him further from the part of the process he clearly loves. Bringing in more people isn't a panacea, it's work, of a different order than coding and composing a game.
