Stuck at level 9 combat

I have been stuck at level 9 in combat for over 2 in game years. I have been doing quite a bit of fighting just the last 3 days I cleared the quarry 3 times just as an example. I have read combat quarterly 3 times and still nothing. Is there a way to see how close you are to getting to the next level?

Nvm 5 mins after I posted this I finally got it.

You get more experience if you fight harder monsters. Go deeper in the mines or find other dungeons to explore. Complete the community center and open up a few more options. Oh, and bring food and bombs with you if you go to new dungeons. They don't do checkpoints and things hit a lot harder.

Fishing and combat are generally the last skills that I upgrade to level 10 due to how much XP is needed from level 9. I do a lot of farming and foraging so I end up reaching level 10 in those skills a lot faster - they also happen to be the first skills I reach level 5 with.

I guess you don't like to put crab pot on your farm or on your path routine? I always put near mine entrance, farm, near Willy's House, and "island" port. Combat skill always the last skill for me to max it out.

You just gave me a great(?) idea - put crab pots, a chest full of bait, and a couple of recycling machines at my regular fishing spots. Including just outside the mine.
