Facts, I needed to build a tree farm in the desert because there wasn't enough on the valley alone. lol
But as the others have pointed out, you do in fact need lots and lots of wood. Personally, I typically leave about a quarter of my farm as a wood lot, just letting the trees grow and then periodically cutting them back.
If you want to effectively "optimize" harvesting process, place some cheap floors like stone or wood cost. Make a barrier and slowly crawl to chop them all.
Or just bomb them. Whatever suits your boat.
