If you can get the wood to repair the bridge at the beach then you should have access to a ready supply of coral and urchins. That can help with early game income - especially if you're not very good with the fishing minigame yet.

This guy is joking but it's not entirely wrong advice - unless you have a means of easily replacing stuff or producing it yourself, you generally want to keep a couple copies of whatever it is, for the community center (prior to being able to check with the inventory menu button at least), for crafting recipes you may not have yet, for fish pond quests, etc. It actually makes things run more smoothly than just getting a couple of coins for selling it.
Once you've got 5 or so you can start just selling them all until the point where you're using them, then you can see how fast you churn through them.
