this character belongs to another player

My friend randomly got the message "this character belongs to another player" when trying to load our save file. They got the warning yesterday, but restarting steam seemed to have fixed the issue. However, they got it again today and we couldn't get it to load the character. I tried the recommended fix here https://forums.stardewvalley.net/threads/help-this-character-belongs-to-another-player.3108/ but I am confused, is this for the host or the person playing with the host? We were never able to resole the issue.

Any help would be great, as we had to make a new cabin and character, but we want to avoid this in the future. Thanks.

AFAIK, the host is going to have the save file in which you clear the incorrect id number.

You can use https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/25368 to reset cabin ownership and assign them to new players.
