Should I buy SDV Guidebook 1.6 or wait?
I've previously bought 2 now out-of-date versions of the guidebook. I bought the last one (1.5) thinking there wouldn't be any more major updates. They do email printable pages with the new content to people who have purchased older versions of the book, but it's kinda hokey-looking to have loose pages stuck into the book. Now I want to replace the one I have, again, but I'm concerned that I'll be in the same situation in a few months time. It looks like we're on track to get a version 1.7, which is tantalizingly close to 2.0.

Basically: What do????

btw the book I'm referring to is: https://www.fangamer.com/products/stardew-valley-guidebook

if your litmus is truly 'am I going to have to buy it again?', don't buy it. Another update will happen, and more after those. CA has stated unequivocally that he will continue to work on the game.

Right now he's working on the porting process, and after that he's going to work on his other game, and then at some point he'll be back to doing another update for this one. It's his magnum opus.

didn't know that it got a real old school guide book, I'm just using the wiki... and google

Yeah ... if you want to look something up, just use the Wiki. It's likely to be more complete, more accurate, and more up-to-date than any printed guide book.

I at first was thinking "people still use guidebooks"? Then I took a look at the link. For anyone wondering, it's more a SDV themed art book someone has made, that just happens to have a bunch of SDV info in it. It's not something you would actually use as a guidebook, because all the nice art means the actual information density is super low.

To OP: I personally wouldn't. I'd assume most of the art is the same as the 2 previous versions you own, and justifying buying a new copy for the few extra pieces that would relate to 1.6 would require you to have both a ton of disposable income and great care for the artist.

I would personally hate having a guide tell me how to play the game. when someone asks something on this forum i'm torn between a complete answer and a basic answer.

like if they want 'how do I make money' the basic answer is quality sprinklers and kegs. the in depth answer goes into the optimal crops and grow cycles and money management.

you get quality sprinklers you will get money relatively easily.

how do I make friends? everyone likes tree fruit. unless you are doing Qi quest give 50 loved gifts in a week (In which case give 7 gifts to your wife, and since krobus, the wizard and dwarf don't move, probably linus and the barflies.

then everyone else gets prismatic shards except haley. apparently the game added stardrop tea which adds a massive amount of friendship especially on their birthdays.

Oh and fishing. except you get a TV channel now in game that gives relevant information, except doesn't seem to cover whether or not it needs to be raining.

I haven't had a guide book since Skyrim, and it was huge and expensive (but well worth it). I really used it a lot! (and have long since passed it down to my step grandson). Ever since then I've just used Wiki/Google. I would not recommend getting a guide book to SDV - because changes....

It's going to be longer than a few months before the next update, but it will happen one day.

The guidebook is gorgeous as a collector's item, and I have thought about buying it for that reason.

I think I had a guide book for the original Pokemon, because GameFAQs was like a year old

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised by some of the responses here. This isn't your typical Primagames guide you'd find at Gamestop. It's basically just like the wiki, except with nice art and bound in a hard cover. I'm not using it for instruction on what to do, but it is a great resource to have on hand, especially during the power outages that frequent my area, which means no internet to access the wiki. Luckily, I have my steamdeck and a backup battery :tabbycat:

I guess my main issue is that I get the feeling of... incompleteness? Knowing that my version of the book is no longer the "definitive" version. Perhaps it's a mix of FOMO and OCD, lol. I guess marketing has scrambled my brain a bit.

In any case; I've come upon a "solution" this time around. A friend of mine, who I know irl, had SDV wishlisted recently, so I bought it for him and plan to give him my out-of-date copy of the book :dredge_classy: :dappershark:. Of course this means I will probably run into the same scenario AGAIN.

Maybe next time I'll have a little lottery and give the next book away on the forum once it becomes "outdated" again. Then my problem can become someone else's :portiapoop:

thats what i was gonna say, its only really worth it as a collectors item as anything else and i'd say its not worth the price

I would imagine that new versions of Stardew will slow significantly when Haunted Chocolatier hits a public release version.

I'm expecting Concerned Ape to still be updating this game when I pop my clogs, so I wouldn't buy a guide book.

But the book was made by a machine! The machine gestalt consciousness should be proud of its grampy printing press :3
