Grass with fence
Hello. Didn't find any info about it. Is grass starter with fence placed on the top still work? I placed it as infinite source of grass for animals, and at the end of the year realised that my silo is empty. Seems like animals can't eat grass :(

The grass starter that have a fence on top is used as a source to spread more grass so the animals could eat, you should place them near the animals are but leave out space so it can spread. As a side note, when Ducks are near any body of water they will swim and sometimes dive into the water - this count as them eating.

Cool, thanks. I have read that they can eat grass with fence, but grass will not dissappear. Seems like I need to change farm a bit :brownchicken:

Animals consume stored straw, but there is not enough grass in the wild

Ideally you need a second layer of fence so there's an animal-free region for the grass to expand into.

Thanks for the tips. Very appreciate

OK. so I have a file, with 6 coops filled with 12 chickens each. 'my silo was empty' do you literally only have one silo?

you know during rain, and winter, the animals do not go outside, and therefore would eat out of the silo right?

so the silo is going to go down regardless of how much grass you have. 1 silo for how many animals? for that matter how much grass? blue grass per animal?

what I would recommend if min maxing, is during the summer/fall you plant Wheat, with speed grow, you harvest that every 3 days and it gives you hay. you could also buy the hay.

the wheat can then either be fed into kegs for Beer or a mill for wheat and then turned into bread.

so every wheat costs 10 + 80 for the deluxe speed grow, and then you turn it into bread that sells for 60. which gets 9 harvests in a season. which is OK, its a great multiplier of 6x but not that great cash. you could do two harvests of starfruit, then do wheat to keep the speed gro thru Fall, and then do two harvests of something if fall if you wanted money.

point is you can GROW hay with wheat if so inclined. you could also just buy the hay for 50 from marnie.

here I'll take some pictures of my farm. and upload them for giggles.

this is my farm

this is my silo capacity.

I got all that area for grass, and yes the chickens ate it. they eat it I put in more hay.

its not a big deal.

calcing I got 6x12 = 72 chickens eating 2016 hay in the winter season.

that would cost 100,800 to just buy the hay. we could grow it on ginger island with the aforementioned wheat easily.

but 72 chickens make alot of eggs, eggs sell for 50 if they were 'normal' chickens, which would be a wash with the hay purchase. but we could throw those eggs into mayonaise makers and sell them for 285 each.

OR we could do as I've done and made GOOD chickens, the golden egg chickens.

It also works with the lightning rod, so place some of those down on top of grass starter within your fenced pasture.

this is what I'm making on my chickens, unsure the time period, haven't been paying attention. they are all juiced up, auto petter, auto grabber, heater, auto feeder, golden animal cracker, rancher professions. this is the middle of winter during squidfest.

I only bother letting them out because eating fresh grass improves their mood.

back of the napkin math says thats 8 days worth of chicken yield. (in winter)

Will a hopper feed into the silo?
Kaeru Jul 10, 2024 @ 2:22pm
@red255, I have enough silo to store hay for all animals for entire winter. And I know about rainy days. After sunny day I noticed that amount of hay in silo reduced, and I had only grass starters planted with fence on it
My main question was "could animals use this starer without eating it to zero". I have seen some comments at forums that this works as infinite source of food. Without taking in accoint that it spreads more grass. I was planning to use it like this, didn't check my hay storage and realized that it dramaticaly reduced at the end of the autumn :rfacepalm:

@Castlegate I used some lightning rods and some fences. Can animals it "under" lightning rod? My main goal was to plant some grass that animals can eat and won't gone to zero. Hoped it works

Animals are one tile vertically and two tiles horizontally for collision purposes so they can't reach anything behind a 'dotted line' fence running east to west while you can walk through it freely. (Unless you're riding a horse)

as you see in my farm picture when I placed down some blue grass starter I stuck something on it, maybe an iron fence, maybe a lightning rod. don't remember. they didn't eat it, they ate everything else.

its not an 'infinite source of food' but they won't eat the piece under the fence.

6 coops with 12 hens would require 15 Silos. And you might 1 one or two more for rainy days. For the Math, each Silo holds 140 hay.

Which is kinda nuts when a basic chest can hold tens of thousands.
