Not having to manually feed items every time is quite nice, and it also saves inventory space because now you don't have to carry your ores or whatever you're producing around with you anymore.
It's far from being full automation though. If you want that, I'd suggest the automate mod.
Meh. I don't carry those things around with me anyway; I store them in a chest right next to all the machines. When the machines are done, I run past them, nabbing everything (which you have to do regardless) then dump the results into the chest while removing the next batch of raw materials, then run back and drop them all in. It takes literally seconds longer.
But for what? Like, I have enough cheese and mayonnaise machines and looms and oil makers to handle my daily collection--if I was short, it would be faster and easier (and available far earlier) to just make more of them than to make hoppers, because then it's one-and-done each day instead of having to swing back to empty them out several times. Not going to help with my 500 kegs and preserves jars either. The only things I can think of them being remotely useful for would be a slime press, although it's literally seconds to just take slimes out of a chest right next to it and fill it manually, then put the rest back in the chest, and the furnace; that one I grant makes sense, especially a heavy furnace, because you can dump the 6 different things it can process, and coal, into the hopper, and it will make whatever it's able to, as possible. A mild convenience for one piece of equipment, assuming you even need bars of stuff that late.
I dunno, I still say it's have of a neat idea; if it had a machine-emptying counterpart, then it would be far more awesome. Doesn't have to be all crazy redstone stuff, just a little chain from hopper to machine to extractor. That would be great for saving time and space and just feeling neat.
Even before I had the deluxe coop, the silo sent the straw to coop and I just had to remove 4 pieces from the bin and lay them out every couple of days (more often in winter).
Certainly. But still, they have their uses. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that they feel kind of "meh", especially for being a late-game item. But they do have a pretty clear use case where they come in handy.
For real automation, like I said, there's the Automate Mod.
Or that one for a more targeted approach.
main uses I have, 1.) deconstructors.
like you can go to wileys and load up on bobbers and deconstruct them into hardwood. this would take up alot of time and inventory space, but I can fill up 4 hoppers and deconstructors. and let them run as I work my farm and get a large amount of hardwood.
could also use this for gold bars and other things but with the improved smelters and dwarven statues increasing ore yield thats not as useful.
I also occasionally get other things I want to deconstruct like cherry bombs which are....dangerous to load manually, but shove them in the deconstructor and they can be safely broken down into copper.
the other use, is loading uh Seed makers is good, without deconstructors I seem to always miss a few machines as i run past, and the seedmakers do it cleanly.
and if I got coffee, I would load up the hoppers and split my beans somewhat evenly to turn it into coffee.
so they have a useful use. just not the full automation of an automate mod.
