I've been relatively lucky with them; I've never been past floor 51 or so except when I staircased to 100 to complete that quest, but I've come across a few prehistoric floors and also random Pepper Rex on regular floors.
They're tough, but they're also my favourite enemy due to having an awesome name.
It's not that they deal too much damage (and if they do, well, I have 100+ cheese on me at all times :D ), but that they take a lot of hits to kill. Fortunately, it's more or less always possible to only fight one of them at a time, even on prehistoric floors.
Magma sprites are way more annoying for sure, especially the pale yellow ones that have the special attack where they stop and then fly at you fast.
Serpents are more annoying than the Rex, too, but easier to hit at the right time than the magma sprites.
