Once you mod, there is no going back.
Its a matter of personal outlook aswell i suppose.
I do second the opinion of "first run should be unmodded" however.
The rate of decay is slow enough that if you talk to a character once every 9 days you'll still gradually become better friends with them; If you give them a basic neutral gift at minimum once every 9 days you'll also gradually become better friends with them.. A liked gift only needs to be given once every 22, and a loved gift is like once every other season- Even longer in all three cases if the gift is silver/gold/iridium quality.
Even your spouse, who has the highest decay rate of 20/day, the decay rate is equal to the gain rate when talking to them which is also 20/day you talk to them; So if you talk to them every other day it won't really decay at all.
You pretty much gotta Try to lose any meaningful amount of friendship with villagers, purposefully not talking to them ever at any point for multiple seasons.
You're sending mixed signals there, mods are much better than vanilla but you don't want people to play with them ?
Now in 1.6. I started pure vanilla again and I like it - sure I miss some mods like Automate and slower time a lot - on other hand it motivate me to not overdo any activity and use limited time and number of stuff around reasonable way to experience things as they "should be".
Btw I see no reason why mod friendship in any way.. it is way too easy to max relation with all already and never felt decay would be a thing (that said I usually focus on group of like 8 villagers at once I max their relations in few weeks in row, not giving them chance to decay and it does not at maximum)
And yes - general rule should be always play 9and compelte or get solid wide expereince) vanilla game before touch any mods. Not only in Stardew.
edit: modder as in modded player, not mod maker
Still, I see no harm in modding gameplay mod like friendship no longer decay.
but then i discovered mods (it was my sons fault, we were playing together and he used a mod without telling me) and there has been no looking back.
I started a new fresh meadow farm when the updated happened and I started without mods --- for about an hour, lol, ---- and then I could not stand playing so slow without the tractor to zoom around on and zip thru the mines quickly.
Now there is no looking back, and I check for new mods everyday and am constantly updating and adding new mods.
But I do recommend that new players play vanilla only on their first play thru.
And remember, boys and girls, once you install that first mod, you forfeit your right to a working game.
LIke people using the word "right" incorrectly? You don't void any warranty or legal rights by modding.
modding is also a mature enough industry that knowing what you are doing entails reading or watching instructions on the level of IKEA furniture, no need to know how the sausage is made.
One may not void any warranty or legal rights, but one still can end up with a borked game and no one to blame but one's self.
Your niggling semantics and pedantry notwithstanding, rights do not have to be legally binding. I have the right to sing the blues. It's one of those 'unalienable' natural rights, such life, liberty and the pursuit of the perfect single malt scotch.
