When you have mods installed , you can play solo by starting the game with SMAPI. Your worlds will not be connected.
However if your friend has mods and you want mods too, then you can play together as long as you both have the SAME mods list. Some mods dont work in multiplayers, you check them out before using.
If you play together and you have different mods, you can still play but there will be glitches in the game. for example, I had a lot of mods that gave new crops, and I went to play on my friends farm. I planted crops from a mod that my friend didnt have, and she could not see the crops I planted.
Make a complete copy of your whole Stardew Valley installation folder from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley
Or wherever you have it installed.
Now copy it to the same MAIN folder and rename it to something like Stardew Valley Modded.
So you should have two folders under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common
Like this:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley Modded
You can now install mods to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley Modded".
When you want to play with mods, simply launch the game from the folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley Modded
All saves remain where they are, so make sure not to load a modded file when playing from the unmodded folder and also don't load an unmodded file when you're playing from the modded folder.
You don't have to start the game from Steam. As long as Steam is running in the background when you manually start the game, you will still get all achievements etc.
Simply start the game from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley
...with the file "Stardew Valley.exe" for unmodded.
And start the game from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley Modded
...with the file "StardewModdingAPI.exe" for modded.
thanks for that trick, i didnt know you could copy an installation on the same drive
my buddy is playing with just vanilla. if i uninstall the game, will that mess up me joining him in our current world? or is it fine since hes the host?
However when you install SMAPI it gives you the option to have a desk top icon for the modded version of the game that is a different chicken then the icon for the vanilla game, So you would still have both options.
Just remember to use vanilla icon when playing with your friend
and Modded icon when playing by yourself.
Note ; once you start using mods you WILL get hooked on them and may want to lore your friend into using them too. As long as you both install the same mods you will have lots of fun.
Have you started your own farm? or do you only play on your friends farm??
Either way it is highly recommended that you both play thru the Vanilla version of the game without mods FIRST before using any mods.... just to learn the game.
That being said, if you both want to try out one mod to make the game easier, I would suggest the Tractor mod as your first start, it makes the game SOOOO much more fun and easier to smash thru the mines.
ive been playing since it came out on ps4, got it on pc about 4-5 years ago. ive heard of the tractor mod, i didnt know you could use it in the mines, sounds neat
