If the grass is blocked they can't eat it.

I'll assume if it's under a fence,m it's blocked. That's a shame.

I would love to hear how others go about feeding their animals in late game, do you just buy hay for them? I don't have to save on money, but it still feels counter productive to pay so much for hay, for animals which produce goods sold for money.

Once you get a silo, any grass you cut goes in there, and it'll auto-feed them to all your animals iirc

The barn and coop need to be upgraded to deluxe for the feeding troughs to be filled automatically, if you have silos before they are upgraded to deluxe, they need to be filled manually. There is a hay dispenser near the troughs.

I'll buy hay and have like half a dozen silos.

Hay is cheap so you stil net a profit buying some if needed compared to your animals not producing anymore.

Also, time is money so imagen how much you can earn the hours you spend on gathering hay doing something else like fishing or deep diving Scull Caverns.

The two reason to have animals eating grass outdoors is for the boost to their friendship level and resetting their mood to full. Once you've got them at full hearts you don't need that friendship boost as petting them is plenty to maintain it at full. The mood reset is only really useful if you forgot to feed or pet them the previous day. Purchased or cut hay works just fine any other time.

I never buy hay. I let the grass grow wild. They eat it all year long as it's not raining or winter. I cut some regularly all year to fill the silos but leaving patches to regrow. Even if starting empty they are filled before the end of fall. Anytime I rains I just cut a little more grass. If they are eating everything in a fenced in area then you may need to expand their area or if you want it small for aesthetic reasons resign yourself to the trade off of buying or cutting the hay yourself.

Yes, they can nibble on grass under a fencepost or lightning rod or something. But they cannot eat it all. Therefore it can always regrow from that saved spot, which is why these are often called "feeding stations".

FWIW grass grows faster than usual when seasons change, and gets a huge boost when the year changes. I think it also gets a boost after a rainy day, but that might just be my perception.

Sometimes I lock my animals in the barn a few days to give grass a chance to recover and spread for those boost days.

You can plant wild grass around your farm and harvest it with a scythe - it'll automatically go to your silo (if you have one and it's not full) as hay. You don't ever really need to buy hay if you keep letting a healthy amount of grass grow somewhere on your farm.

You'll need silos anyway for Winter.
