Using food that increases luck or the luck ring will tend to get you more items and also change the small glow and magnet rings into their larger versions.
There's a special bobber that you can learn to make by doing a quest for willy that increases fish quality by one level removing the need to get a perfect catch for iridium fish.
I've gotten early gold / iridum bars, high level weapons, and even a Prismatic Shard from fishing chests in past runs even before the update so they are 100% worth even if it is junk sometimes.
Also, treasure is ALWAYS worth going for, sacrificing the perfect catch and decreasing fish quality is of no consequence when you can get free stuff, often really good stuff.
