Coal was never really RARE (uncommon tho it may have been), the real question is/was how much time and effort do you put in looking? Since 1.6 dropped, I've been all but rolling in coal......
But I found that useful since killing them got me closer to get that sweet burglar ring.
I didn't even know that it could be bought XD
I am approaching a full 999 stack of coal in my chest at home, and it's gotten to the point the only reason I care about coal, is to collect a few pieces so I can make bombs while exploring mines/skull caves, and otherwise I don't care about coal drops.
Once you unlock the Quarry, you have access to it, and the Quarry Mine, both of which have coal nodes that drop 3-4 coal when mined (this is new to 1.6).
Once you unlock Mining Mastery, you can make the Dwarf King Statue, which allows you to select More Coal as one of the daily buffs. This comes up as a choice way too often (because you don't need more stinking coal if you've got 900+ already) which is also new to 1.6.
Coal Nodes also spawn in the Volcano Dungeon.
And others have said, Dust Sprites drop them. You're gonna be killing 500 of them for the ring that you get from their Slayer achievement anyhow, and in the process you should get several hundred coal.
Coal is not rare, whatsoever.
But I agree that having the posibility to do it really reduces the pressure to get more coal.
As for the lategame, where i start to need it in big amounts, i simply buy it, but not so much because they're rare, but rather because i've so much money, that i can afford to be lazy in some areas.
Farming trees to turn them into coal is way more time consuming than just farming coal directly, especially once you've the burglar's ring. You need like 2 trees per 3 coal and that's not just time consuming (especially when you've planted them far away and you needing to put coal in and wait for it), but also a waste wood that could've been used for other stuff, as it's one of the most needed ressource in the game.
The only time i make coal this way is, if i want to hand in a tool and need like only 1 or 2 more bars, while not having any coal
