Coal is so rare
i think everyone who have ever played this game have this opinion: coal is really rare!
and it should be like this? idk.
we have lots of ways to farm coal, but my favorite way is to kill those black circles in the local mines after floor 41, but i ask myself frequently if this should be the right way to farm coal
do you guys think that they should update this and fix the really low droprate% from the stones in mines? i think it would really better for early game, as in end game everyone buys it from clint.
never seen anyone talking about this b4, but i think this really needs a fix in the future

Don't think so. You can farm like 100 coals each days. Same strategy as killing too many dust sprites.

It's never been spoken about, because it's never been a problem. Unless you are mass-smelting EVERY ore you get, it's not too difficult to farm.

Killing the Dust Sprites is the easiest way to get coal, and once you kill 500 of them, it becomes even easier. In Fall, once you get Monster Musk from the Prismatic Jelly quest, you can get 100+ coal a day.

The ONLY time coal starts becoming an issue is when/if you decide to mass-produce kegs. But, even then, you only need 2 coal per week per keg. I normally make 20 kegs a week to start, so, I only need 40 coal a week. One day of farming get's me double that.

I don't think I've ever brought coal in any of my saves, because, even with me having millions, the price isn't worth it when it's easily farmable. Even 1 run of Skull Caverns nets me around 30-50 coal, so, I usually end up with 400+ coal just sitting there.
Strange as it is I had little issue with coal in current game. Partially because I play with 50% margin so I had much slower expansion than i am used to. (at same time all first year I had no extra cash for spend for anything)

But what I found as good source:

- charcoal - I choosed untraditional perks for this run with new farm so I went with forester (also stack with book - chance for 40+ wood per tree), last but not least several wood chippers as I was never in shortgae of hardwood (lumberjack) - as result I spent thousand or two of wood solely on turning to coal (with plenty left for all needs)

- quarry - there are coal nodes with decent coal drop

- also got plenty coal from fishing chests (pirate) and geodes

- dust sprites (+burglar ring) / just rinse and repeat something like floors 60-70 is likely efficient. But frankly I did nto do single run dedicated only to this - in fact my bottlneck for jar shed in this run were suprisingly stones, not coal...

It is jars - 8 coal per jar sums up.

It really isn't rare at all. I am playing the game right now and I have over 100 coal in my chest. And I never actively farmed for it, I just got it randomly through the mines and other places. And I have smelted every single ore I've got as well, and crafted a bunch of things that needed coal. It's OVERABUNDANT, unless you're mass producing something like Jars or Bee Houses.

Besides, even if you happen to need lots of it early on or you have just gotten unlucky, there are two incredibly easy ways to gain tons of coal early on:

- Kill dust sprites
- Charcoal kiln

And later when you're rich you can just buy it since it's not very expensive.

you can get a machine to turn extra wood into coal,

After a hiatus, I came back to the game the day 1.6 dropped.

I'm playing the Forest map, which has 8 hardwood stumps off to the left.

Then I discovered the new wood chippers. Wonderful things, these wood chippers, so I bought 5 from Robin, and I convert much of those 16 hardwoods to wood.

And I have 4 charcoal kilns to make that wood into coal.

I have not run out of coal or had to buy it since.

You can do the same on any other farm, there are enough trees in the forest and around your farm to turn any excess into coal if needed. And they grow back on their own very fast. Alternatively you can plant hardwood trees too and turn that into wood, they give 10 hardwood each when chopped down. Or visit secret woods daily and turn that into wood... there are so many ways to get wood! Meaning there are many ways to get coal too.

What I have problem with after hitting this "artisan goods rush phase" is not coal... it's basic stone. Even mining entire quarry mine daily doesn't satisfy my needs for jars.

I know that the Forest farm is not the only way. I just like it because it's right at my doorstep and isn't guarded by slimers. It's really handy because I don't have to go schlepping my ass all over the place just to keep up on charcoal.

just buy it from robin at that point. same with coal, sometimes it's just more efficient to simply buy it.

I did so for several jars, but 40x100g worth of stone per jar while I'm almost halfway through rushing Golden Clock is kinda... Well... Let's just say I'm gonna try volcano dungeon or reseting my mine to non-dangerous version, so big boulders can spawn. I'm cheap like that.

yeah i always stockpile a bunch at the end of year 1.

if you already have volcano unlocked don't forget about deconstructing stairs.

Yeah, best way to farm stone is to just reset your mines to normal and then go down the ladder, not the elevator. You can get 500+ stone a day by just doing level 1 over and over. Easiest way to do it.

Since 1.6 was released, coal isn't so rare anymore. I think this is a no-problem now.

I was crying a little bit about the lesser amount of artifact spots but you know what? Concerned ape just rebalanced the game for the better: Now there is a totem in the lategame that allows you to create lots of artifact spots. It's kind of embarrasing to see me crying over them before.

Just like with coal. There has never been so much coal. Just advance a lttle more.
